To make a real, sustainable dent in the global burden of mental illness, psychological science requires full-scale reform—away from over-focus on individual treatment, and towards population-wide approaches to intervention and health promotion. It was an honor to be part of this amazing group through the American Psychological Association to help establish guiding principles, and paths forward, to making this reform possible.

Too often meaningful engagement is an afterthought, a tick box exercise, or just another requirement for a grant proposal, but people with lived experience should be at the very centre of everything from funding research to designing products, services or treatments.
Today over 400 people with lived experience of non-communicable diseases, mental health and neurological disorders will share their insights.

Grace with grit 👏 Last year, the 21-year-old gymnast was diagnosed with two rare kidney diseases, which sidelined her training and rocked her physical and mental health. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it.” There were times when her “motivation started to fall,” she said.
After her diagnosis and plenty of rest, Lee’s team adjusted her training schedule. “It was me proving to myself that I can overcome hard things, and to hopefully inspire others to never let life’s setbacks stop you from going after your dreams.”
Resilience is a cornerstone for athletes, significantly contributing to both mental and physical fitness. It enhances mental toughness, enabling athletes to cope with stress, recover swiftly from setbacks, and maintain unwavering motivation. This ability to develop adaptive thoughts and behaviors is crucial not only for improved performance but also for overall long-term health and well-being.

On MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK IN EUROPE I'd like to talk with you about 'mental health'... and what typically follows those chilling words from a doctor: 'I'm sorry... but you have cancer.' Patients often become terrified... of the treatments: the chemotherapy, and radiation, and surgery... and that never-ending question: 'will the cancer ever return'.
This is Mental Health Awareness Week in Europe, and as president of the European Cancer Organisation and as someone who's devoted his career to the mental health of cancer patients and survivors, I can assure you: many of them suffer in silence, struggling to cope.
We can, and we must, do more to help them. As a first step: we need much more screening... and much better screening... to assess the emotional and psychological well-being of every person in Europe diagnosed with cancer. These structured 'assessments' can help healthcare professionals identify and address the anxiety, and depression... the fear, and trauma, and uncertainty that follow a cancer diagnosis.
Europe's ambitious Beating Cancer Plan has begun this effort. But it's up to us to ensure it continues... and expands. With Europe's parliamentary elections just a month away, now is the time to ask every candidate to commit to Europe's Beating Cancer Plan... and to make the mental health of cancer patients... a much greater priority.
On Europe's Mental Health Awareness Week, we are shining a light on mental health and cancer care. 🩺 For those fighting cancer, as well as for survivors and caregivers, the journey is not just physical, but also emotional and psychological.
