As today is #WorldPoetryDay I have written a short poem for leaders that are curious about joining a peer group... My Peer Group Journey Sat at my desk with my head in my hands, Struggling to make sense of my future plans, I saw an event that caught my eye, Something felt right so I gave it a try. I attended a group feeling nervous inside, Imposter syndrome raging, I had so much to hide. What would they think when they found me out, I’m not a perfect leader, I’m riddled with doubt. I couldn’t believe this group of people I’d found, So down to earth, both feet on the ground, They were open and honest, unsure what to do, Just like me, they had problems too. I felt so at home within hours with the group, I felt so supported I could be vulnerable too. The offers of help were beyond my expectations, They felt so genuine I accepted to take them. I’ve laughed and I’ve cried, and felt every emotion, It’s been so magical, this peer group potion. I’m a much better person, and better leader to, And I’m far more honest when I don’t know what to do. 10 years have passed and I’m still with this group, My friends, my advisors, my own little troop. It’s hard to explain the benefits I’ve gained, The return has been priceless with all the improvements I’ve made. So, if you’re reading this with a curious mind, And the solution to your problem has been hard to find, Take the leap of faith and give it a go, At the end of the day, you don’t know what you don’t know. Over the past year, I've learned invaluable lessons by taking action and doing the work. Running my business from a place of passion, not necessity, has been a game-changer, allowing me to focus on growth without the worry of financial constraints. Some say it is a disadvantage to not be desperate as you don’t focus as much on ROI and making money is essential. I do not disagree but it is nice to have a runway for a few years where you can experiment and learn. In the realm of business models, I've delved into the conference and retreat space, fostering a community, and offering mentorship programs. Embracing the journey, I've tackled legal intricacies and debunked the myth of an "easy button," emphasizing the essence of hard work for achieving success. A pivotal realization is the impact of generosity and gratitude in fostering meaningful connections. For every instance of being taken advantage of, there are countless grateful individuals whose lives have been positively influenced. It's essential to acknowledge and appreciate those who inspire and support us, as their encouragement fuels our progress. Reflecting on those who have made a difference in your life recently, take a moment to express your gratitude and admiration. Happy Friday!! February is coming to an end. What a joy to be well into the year. Yesterday, I attended the second See Change Sessions event day. I was happy to hear The Science of Hope-Based Storytelling segment. What I valued most about the segment is that it reiterated how important it is to cultivate hope within ourselves. The speaker even mentioned something I share with my clients. "You cannot give something that you do not have." Thus, we can build the capability to cultivate value, hope, and joy within ourselves. Then, and this was the best part, in my opinion, to let people be the witness of it. Wow!! I had to take a step back from my computer on that one. It reminded me of the joy of inclusion and why I value it so much. On a daily, I deliberately look for things to be joyful about. I am alive! YES! The sun is shining. YES! I have a bed to lay my head on. YES! It does not mean we will not have experiences that make us feel less hopeful or joyful. Yet, we then get to choose what we think about. I find freedom in knowing I get to choose my thoughts. I think about the joy of inclusion. Great segment!! Make 2024 the year you take steps toward the success you've been seeking. Don't wait on the sidelines and hope for change. Hope is not a strategy.
