Special Olympics Minnesota Unified Champion City Schools Manager - Minneapolis

#FlashbackFriday Another great memory from this last school year -- a day full of FIRSTS for Minneapolis! March 8th, 2024 Special Olympics Minnesota Capitol Hill Day included two Minneapolis Public Schools: Howe Elementary and Roosevelt High School! This was the very first time any Minneapolis schools have participated in our SOMN Capitol Hill Day to speak about the power of Inclusion and the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® movement, and hear from incredible high school and adult student leaders involved in Unified across Minnesota and leaders that work every day at our Minnesota State Capitol, including First Lady of Minnesota, Gwen Walz, who is now on the Board of Directors for 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, leaders in Minnesota education, and then ending with a visit to our local Minneapolis representatives. This was also the first time any elementary schools have been part of a Capitol Hill Day. Howe Elementary school had a great group of students and staff representing that day, and had made arrangements for our students to visit their representative. Thanks to the incredible work happening at Howe this first school year they have been part of the Unified movement, to make this special day happen. Finally this was also the first year we've ever had representation from the city of Minneapolis on our Special Olympics Minnesota Student Board of Directors, and two of these great leaders from Roosevelt were able to attend this special day - Zoe and Sophia. Thanks to Christian Alberto Ledesma for the outstanding leadership at Roosevelt, for helping to pave the way for what full inclusion can now look like at all our high schools in Minneapolis, which are now signed on to Unified - since Roosevelt has led the way pioneering Unified in Minneapolis the past 5 years. This will be a joyful day we all will never forget -- full of so many memorable milestones. #InclusionRevolution #GenerationUnified #MPSProud #SOMN #InclusiveStudentLeadership
