The region faced a significant challenge when a lack of snowfall and a sudden severe cold snap resulted in the loss of over 97% of the 2024 grape crop. Change professionals are the calming donkeys of the business world… true story. According to our boss, who returned earlier this year from a camping (more like glamping) trip in the Wiltshire countryside, he learnt something new. Being a huge fan of analogies, he began to explain his discovery. A farmer explained to him that when a bull is introduced to a herd of cows, the cows become nervous and the bull can get extremely aggressive due to the change (and testosterone). Hence, in comes the calming donkey. For some reason, not entirely understood, the donkey has a calming effect on the bull, which then translates to the cows, enabling change and possibly even procreation. So, change professionals are the calming donkeys of the business world—hopefully not resulting in procreation though! A couple of months ago I did a 46km, three day hike with old friends in Tasmania and loved every minute of it. But you know what? I almost missed the significance and enormity of the event. I've always loved to hike, but due to various injuries, a year earlier I could barely do 30 minutes walking, let alone three days with 4000 steps. In a moment of quiet solitude after the hike, it dawned on me how far I'd come. I felt a wave of incredible joy, pride, astonishment and relief at how much things have changed in just 12 months. It was an amazing moment and one I very nearly missed. My message here is how powerful it can be to have quiet space to yourself. To stop and reflect on all that you have achieved.  I promise you it will be astonishing, rewarding and motivating. Compared to one year ago, ask yourself: ⭐What are you doing now that would have been intimidating then? ⭐What have you achieved since this time last year? ⭐What big challenges have you overcome? ⭐What are you most proud of?  ⭐What have you learned about yourself? ⭐What has shifted from your effort over time? ⭐What impact have you made on others? ⭐What are you more confident about now? What’s the wilder way to maintain momentum when your goals keep clashing? I had an absolute brain fart last week. Another fellow ex-agency owner kindly coached me round from it. He said a word that hit hard. Because it's what's missing in me at the moment: fast momentum. I know it and it's driving me mad. Because I love fast momentum. But I have two goals that are clashing at the moment for me: - being available for the kids at this crucial time in their development - starting up a new venture that has the potential to make a real difference at a crucial time in this sector Both are time time-critical. Both are super important to me. Nature nails this. It looks at ways to evolve to meet its clashing goals given the circumstances it's in. So today - I'm looking to the silver birch tree for my inspiration. This lovely skinny little tree, with silvery peeling bark, is found across the UK in nutrient-poor soils and open habitats such as heathlands, moorlands, and disturbed areas. But, it faces conflicting goals related to water and light. So it grows fast, with a shallow root system to take what it can from nutrient-poor soil, and has silvery bark to keep the sunlight from draining its scant resources. This means it can play a crucial ecological role as a pioneer species, colonising disturbed areas and providing habitat and food for a variety of wildlife The perfect metaphor for adapting to enable sustained growth and market presence whilst also giving food and shelter to those who depend on it. Time to get my silvery skin on and bounce off the heat of self-criticism, spread my base widely to find the nutrients I need for the business and family to thrive, and take what I can to grow fast. Out on the Appalachian Trail - Miles from town - Realizing Health is Wealth! I put a Mt. Dew in the river to get cold. Few minutes later I pulled it down and enjoyed the cold drink on a hot afternoon out on the Appalachian Trail. The next day, out in the wilderness I was cramping so badly that I could not stand up straight. Struck by illness miles from civilization, I had two choices: give up or push through. I had to push through. What I learned during those testing times goes beyond hiking. The parallels to business are striking: Celebrating Small Wins: Each step on the trail was a small victory. Similarly, in business, recognizing and celebrating small milestones keeps morale high and drives progress. Health is Wealth: Prioritizing health – both on the trail and in the workplace – is non-negotiable. A healthy team is a productive team. This experience was transformative, teaching me lessons in perseverance, planning, and health that I apply daily in my career.

#Perspective It's all about perspective. When I was preparing to market a paid of ~$50,000,000 resorts in Traverse City, Michigan I spend many weeks traveling back and forth from Metro Detroit to Traverse City to familiarize myself with the city, the community, and the real estate. Part of my reconnaissance involved not only touring my listing site inside the properties and by land, but I was also given access to a boat so that I could conceptualize the properties and their position relative to East Bay and Lake Michigan. To anyone who grew up spending time on Lake Michigan like I did, that massive freshwater lake always holds a special spot in their heart. One day after hours of analyzing the market and the resorts I decided to take the boat out, point it across the bay and out towards the expanse of Lake Michigan and not look back. I set out full throttle on a mission to traverse the bay and get out into the mouth of Lake Michigan. After an hour and a half with the engine wide open I was finally looking out into the massive abyss that is one of our Great Lakes. Soon after I felt compelled to cut the motor and just stand there, taking it all in. Engulfed on almost all sides by deep dark fresh water it hit me just how big this lake really is. Caught up in that moment I couldn't help but recognize that if I zoomed out a bit - if I changed my perspective - I was floating on what was merely a puddle on the surface of the earth left over from the melting glaciers 15,000 years ago. So what's the significance of this epiphany? How can we relate this to every day life? Well the answer to that is quite simple: as humans we have this incredible ability to #shift our perspective (at will if we are disciplined enough) so that when it serves us what appears to be a massive freshwater abyss can be seen as merely a leftover puddle. I use this type of perspective shifting mindset whenever it serves me. Sometimes a task, or an assignment, or a situation SEEMS insurmountable, inescapable. A simple shift of perspective shows that it's just one event amongst a series of so many more in our #life cycle. Perspective is paramount and shifting it allows us to see more clearly. 🌱 **Day 6 of My Job Hunt: A Lesson in Growth and GRIT** 🌱 As I navigate the challenging waters of job hunting, I've been reflecting on the vital role of GRIT in our professional journeys, particularly the "G" for Growth. My source of inspiration? My resilient Monstera plant. 🌵A Reflection on Growth: "Success is like a tree," goes one of my favorite quotes. It doesn't spring up overnight but requires consistent nurturing—water, sunlight, and air. Just as a cactus thrives under different conditions than a pear tree, individuals within a team flourish under varying degrees of care. ☘️Leadership Insights: This brings me to the essence of leadership. A true leader is akin to a gardener, dedicated to nurturing their team's diverse needs. If a plant fails to grow, we don't fault the plant. Instead, we reevaluate the care it's receiving. In the same vein, if a team member struggles, it prompts us to consider how we're supporting their growth. 🪴The Garden Metaphor: Your team is a garden, diverse in its needs but united in its potential for growth. Just like seedlings that push through the soil come spring, with the right conditions, your team too will flourish. This journey has reminded me of the power of patience, understanding, and the tailored support necessary for growth. As we advance, let's embody the gardener's spirit—nurturing, patient, and ever-hopeful for the bloom that follows winter's retreat. Navigating Life’s Rapids 🌊🏔️ Coming back from a whitewater rafting trip on the Ocoee with the family, I’m reminded of how many life lessons can be found in nature. In whitewater rafting, constant paddling is key to riding through turbulent waters. It’s this persistent effort that generates control and stability, helping you navigate through the roughest rapids with confidence. Life can throw challenges our way- some expected and some unexpected, but in these moments, our consistent efforts and unwavering commitment make all the difference. If we can dig in, stay in sync with the people we’re in the boat with, and push through, we’re probably going to make it to calmer waters (and stay in the boat!) Today was an exciting day because I finally made it to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls! The last time I visited, I only saw the falls from Buffalo, New York, and missed out on the majestic Horseshoe Falls. Seeing both waterfalls in all their glory was truly breathtaking. As I stood there, mesmerized by the millions of gallons of water cascading every minute, a fascinating thought struck me: what makes this natural wonder such a popular tourist attraction is the act of falling. If the water merely flowed along as a gentle river, it would be beautiful but not nearly as awe-inspiring or famous. This realization got me thinking about how sometimes it's our falls that make us great. Imagine if the water at Niagara Falls just trickled along peacefully; it wouldn't capture the same sense of wonder and excitement. In our own lives, we often dread mistakes and failures, but they are integral to our growth and character. Just like the roaring waters of Niagara, our falls can dramatically shape who we are, making us more resilient, wiser, and even more interesting. So, next time you stumble or face a setback, remember Niagara Falls and embrace the fall. It's through these moments of descent that we gain momentum and strength.
