Prestige in journalism should remain separate

How do you handle navigating sensitive subjects in sports journalism? ✏️ When it comes to sports journalism, navigating sensitive subjects can be a challenge. How do you approach a topic that may be uncomfortable or controversial for your audience? One approach is to lay down all the facts for your audience in an organized way, to inform the reader. Engage your readers by subtly asking/answering your own questions on the subject so you can help them see it from a different angle. Ultimately, it's about finding a way to approach the subject in a way that feels engaging and respectful to all parties involved. #sportsjournalism #sensitivesubjects #perspective

As we all reflect on what happened at Bell Media yesterday, a reminder that the journalism industry has been struggling for some time now. While this story is about sports journalism in particular, I think it speaks to what is happening in many other facets of western society right now. It's really prevalent in politics right now. We don't have enough journalists out there doing the real hard work that it takes to hold power to account. What's the solution? It's two-fold in my books. First, the business model needs to change. Whether it's more independent outlets or it's bigger companies willing to invest in real journalism, there needs to be a prioritization on these kinds of stories vs. the clickbait and ambulance-chasing that grabs a lot of airtime. Journalism is, at its core, a public service, and it should be treated as such. Secondly, it's the audience. If you really, truly believe in the power of journalism, you need to start supporting it. The reason many outlets go to the clickbait and ambulance-chasing is because that's what captures the most eyeballs. It's a sad but true statement, as numbers don't lie. Over the years, I've seen the analytics and can tell you that I can put months into an investigation and get barely any attention on the story, while a random murder story would get thousands of clicks. Guess which one is going to get priority? It's a struggle for an industry I've known and loved for my entire adulthood. I want to see it succeed. Not only does media and journalism hold power to account, but it serves to inform and entertain its audience. I'm having a hard time understanding what the world will look like if these outlets all simply disappear.
