Great to be able to attend The Solent Cluster event today, so important to highlight the real challenges facing businesses in the Solent especially around availability of power, the challenge of the cost delta of using greener fuels and the capital cost differentials associated with adopting machinery and technologies based on alternative fuels. Highlighting these issues is a vital step in working together to solve them. #sustainabilty #maritime #railfreight
The Solent Cluster’s event at the University of Southampton Science Park is underway with Lindsay-Marie Armstrong and our Chair Anne-Marie Mountifield kicking things off. A packed room too with lots of energy and enthusiasm to create change.

“We’ve arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science and technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don’t know anything about it?” – Carl Sagan in a 1996 interview with Charlie Rose In light of Carl Sagan’s words, let’s encourage a culture of learning and understanding. It’s up to us to bridge the gap between science and society, to ensure a future that’s not only advanced but also aware and responsible. Our collective effort in education and conscious decision-making will pave the way for a brighter, more informed tomorrow.

Happy National Science Day from AastraZen . Let us celebrate the day for the impact of science in our daily lives. Let us honour the contribution of scientists, researchers and analysts to make the world smarter. We require a victorious spirit, one that propels us to claim our deserved position under the sun. It's a spirit that acknowledges our status as heirs to a rich civilization, affirming our entitlement to occupy our rightful place on this planet. Should this indomitable spirit emerge, there will be no force capable of hindering us from realizing our destined future. Let us keep the journey on from smart meters- smart grid-smart city- smart state- smart country-smart world. ☺

Vom Wissen zum Handeln: Führen mit Weitblick | Präsident der Exzellenzuniversität Hamburg | Leadership & Higher Education | International Collaboration & Innovation
This week was all about "PIER"! 🌟 What is behind PIER and how does it make Hamburg even more attractive and visible as a metropolis of science and innovation? 🔹 PIER PLUS steering committee The PIER PLUS Steering Council met at Universität Hamburg on Monday. PIER PLUS promotes and strengthens cooperation and networking between all state universities in Hamburg and non-university research institutes in the Hanseatic city. The cooperation of the partners in PIER PLUS is coordinated in six different profiles: Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, Health and Infection, Climate and Coast, Conflict and Coordination, Climate-friendly Mobility, New Materials. 🔹 60 years of cooperation between UHH & DESY Universität Hamburg and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY have been working closely together for over 60 years. In 2011, the two intensified their cooperation and agreed on a strategic partnership: PIER - Partnership of Universität Hamburg and DESY. PIER stands for "Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research". PIER helps to promote young scientists, initiate joint research projects and simplify academic appointment procedures. 🔹 PIER DAY 2023 The "PIER DAY 2023" took place on Wednesday at Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. Among other things, it focused on PETRA IV, the planned even stronger research collaboration between DESY and UHH as part of the planned excellence cluster projects (Excellence Strategy) and future infrastructure development. Our vision for PIER: ➡️ We want to expand the partnership even further over the next five years and find new innovative ways and formats of collaboration. ➡️ Together we will develop the Bahrenfeld research campus into a unique place of research with international appeal. ➡️ The possible realization of PETRA IV would have a very positive impact on the future research activities of UHH, UKE and DESY. 💡 PIER and PIER PLUS - cooperation and visibility: For me, PIER and PIER PLUS are two of Hamburg's flagships in the field of science and cooperation. Together, we make Hamburg visible worldwide as a metropolis of science.
