A week ago I was sat having a beer at the Giants game in San Fransisco.. it’s amazing how quickly your holiday seems a distance memory. But I love how going to a different country helps the creative mind. I’ve come back looking at advertising differently - be proud and bold Repeat repeat repeat - that’s the same adverts on tv constantly playing. As consumers we need to be told a few times about a product for us to resonate with it Keep it simple and be clear on your weekly goals. Being a small business means we just don’t have the resource to do it.. so priority is key!! There’s a fair chance that you were one of the 123.4 million people who watched the Super Bowl on Sunday evening. Whether you watched the big game because you wanted to see Taylor Swift, for an excuse to eat buffalo chicken dip at a friend’s house, or because you actually like football, everyone can agree that this is the one time of year we enjoy watching commercials. Often, they are just as memorable as the game itself! But these commercials can serve more than just mere entertainment in between quarters and during injury breaks, as they can teach us several marketing lessons that can be applied to your own brand. 'What's your favorite Super Bowl commercial?' is such a loaded question for a marketer to address, but I'll bite.    When I review rankings lists like USA Today, it feels directionally right. But for me, it's forecasting the business impact is where the rubber meets the road. As a viewer and consumer, I love the brands that made me laugh (State Farm), pulled at the heartstrings (Google Pixel Javier - not quite the iconic Loretta ad but a magical effort, NFL Born To Play - Kwesi's passion for the game steals the show), and extended far beyond the game itself (Dunkin's post-game content plan is making me laugh 2 days later). Oh and the Sphere itself showed the power of IRL advertising is alive and well. But the ones that I find most intriguing are spots that persuade us to think of a brand differently - and connect consumers to new usage occasions or offerings. This helps message break-through and minimizes misattribution to competitive brands. A few to note: Uber Eats - Not just for eats. Toggle at the end was telling - right after groceries, it toggles to alcohol. Very telling given the drizly platform is coming to an end. Could they have landed the alcohol opportunity even harder? Poppi - Taking 'big soda' head-on during the beverage category's biggest stage, with a fresh and fun vibe. Popeye's - Launching a wings offering. Did this spot land the news for you? They better push this offering hard for March Madness - the next big wings occasion. I would be surprised if there isn't an instant bump for these 3 brands. In a world where marketers are asked to showcase ROI quickly (perhaps unfairly so!), I'd bet these deliver trial - especially if they have a strong full-funnel plan to keep the momentum going. What's your favorite part of the Super Bowl? I know it should be about the game, but for me, it's mostly about the food and the commercials. 🏈 For several years, I worked in the advertising industry, and the Super Bowl was an official holiday for us. The day after the game, we'd all bring in our leftovers, gather into rec room and proceed to re-watch every commercial that aired during the game and voting on our favorites. It was fun, yes, but it also helped us to see trends and understand what our clients were looking for. It's not much different for me today, except these days I pay much closer attention to the VO than the actual ideas. Trends change for us as well! Are things still super conversational, like you're talking to your best friend? Or are we leaning more toward an "announcery" read these days? Is the Millenial sound still popular? How much vocal fry do you hear? All these things help me to grow and serve my clients in the best possible way.
