Safe and Sound AI: Ilya Sutskever Launches "Safe Superintelligence" Startup Former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever is making waves again, this time with the launch of his own company, Safe Superintelligence Inc. This new venture, co-founded with Daniel Levy and Daniel Gross (both also ex-OpenAI), is dedicated to developing powerful AI with a critical focus on safety. "We believe safety and capabilities go hand-in-hand," the company states. "By tackling them as technical challenges solvable through innovation, we can advance AI responsibly." Their mission: maximize AI capabilities while ensuring safety remains paramount, allowing for peaceful progress. Sutskever's involvement in OpenAI's leadership shakeup last year raised questions about the organization's direction. Now, he's taking the reins with a clear vision: deliver safe superintelligence. "This company's sole focus is building a safe superintelligence," Sutskever told Bloomberg. "It's insulated from external pressures, allowing us to concentrate on this critical goal." What are your thoughts on this new venture? Is prioritizing safety the right approach for superintelligence development? Let's discuss! #AI #Superintelligence #Safety #OpenAI #SafeSuperintelligence #FutureofTech https://lnkd.in/dDs3zcN7

And just like that, non-profit-for-profit model just died a sudden death. 💀 I’m not exactly a fan of Sam Altman, but it’s easy for me empathize with him right now. OpenAI itself is now a zombie, the walking dead. The exodus of talent combined with the loss of leadership will do their work in mere weeks. 🧟♂️ 🧟♀️ 🧟 OpenAI might even be totally dead depending on the contractual outs MSFT left themselves (assuming this wasn’t MSFTs plan all along). Best guess, unless there was misconduct, MSFT clownhammers OpenAI and reconstitutes the board by Sunday, or else. How many times must we be taught the same lesson? Barring misconduct, Founders should never cede control of their companies, unless they themselves think it is in the best interest of their company. That means having protective provisions, excess voting rights, permanent board seats as a voting class. If investors object, find another investor. Neeeext. It’s not worth it. At NWP, we know that founder-led startups create superior returns, while investor-led startups rarely do. #openai #startups #founders
One second you are the hero, the next second you are the goat. From Elizabeth Holmes to Adam Neumann, Masayoshhli Son and others, the ups and downs of founders continues. "OpenAI pushed out co-founder Sam Altman as chief executive officer, saying he wasn’t being “consistently candid in his communications” with the artificial-intelligence company‘s board." Altman's response: “i loved my time at openai. it was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. most of all i loved working with such talented people. will have more to say about what’s next later.” Privately he said other things: "He told people after the announcement that he was shocked and angry about the board’s decision. He also said he felt it was the result of a power struggle between him and members of the board, according to a person familiar with one of the conversations. Obviously this announcement "sent shock waves through the tech world. It came after a week in which Altman appeared several times in public to talk about the company, and marked a stunning turnabout for a man who had become the face of the generative AI boom that has gripped tech executives and regular people since OpenAI made its ChatGPT service public almost exactly a year ago." "The change came as a surprise to Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion into OpenAI for a 49% stake. Microsoft’s top executives found out about Altman’s ouster minutes before the announcement, according to a person familiar with the situation." The uncertainty and lack of details in the announcement reflects the same situation in AI. I have argued for years that there should be more details about the details of AI success stories, if it is as transformative as many proponents claim. Until those details are made clear, we should be skeptical. #technology #innovation #startups #ai # #artificialintelligence

Getting fired from your own company is a rite of passage for a lot of founding CEOs. While the founding CEO is consumed by the technology, team, customers and fundraising, one or more instigators leisurely sow doubt and discord within the board and wait for an opportune moment to oust the CEO - should it materialize. The newly appointed interim-CEO is often the instigator and will try to consolidate their power immediately. After all, cui bono? The ouster has zero chance of success without support from the biggest shareholder. Unless the CEO is inadequate at a function, the biggest shareholder is rarely the instigator since the cost of being discovered is highest for them. If they join the instigators, the fate of the CEO is sealed. If the CEO has enough support from the operating team, the damage from the ouster can result in hesitation or even outright failure of the ouster. Everyone goes in full CYA. Everyone's shocked and no one knows anything. Instigators and their inner circle use outside counsel and don't leave any traces. If the CEO returns, they will only trust the executives that resigned in solidarity before the success of the coup was in doubt. Everyone else will be purged, eventually. Either way at that point the company is severely damaged and will need time to heal. If the coup succeeds, the value of the ousted CEO will become apparent over time. Founders, please select and manage your boards carefully and pro-actively. Yes, one more thing you NEED to do. Success will not save you, success is precisely why the knives are coming out. You gotta love politics. Yet one more reason you can't have nice things.
