🍎 Here are some practical tips to help you and your child start the school year off right and carry that momentum throughout the year.

It's Take a Child Outside week! Time spent outdoors has benefits both outside and inside the classroom. We're talking a reduction in ADHD symptoms as well as in stress and anxiety, improved creativity and problem solving, improved social relationships, and improvements in regulation. Children are spending about 50% less time outdoors compared to 20 years ago, as explained by the National Wildlife Federation. All children deserve (and need!) to experience safe, open, green spaces. Becca Owen so glad you posted this! Keeping it simple is best. When we try to truly comprehend the enormity of the influence we all have as both educators and parents on the children we teach and raise in these first five years it can feel, somewhat, overwhelming at times. However, it seems fitting that in the rather complex and over complicated educational landscape that we find ourselves in today that it takes a seven year old to succinctly and powerfully deliver a very simple message to us all. Be present, play, have fun with your child and limit the screen time and you won't go far wrong in helping to raise a child who is healthy, thriving and happy. I would also mention the need to ask for help when needed and accept help often! Community is key. It really does take a village. It also begs the question what place do screens have in our classrooms and homes for the under fives? Even though we might well be logging nappy changes, meal times and WOW moments on iPads for what feels like a minute or two, it still creates a barrier with the child or key children in our groups, and in a world where there is no shortage of screens now in a young child's life is this truly neccessary or needed? Are we in danger of losing those moments of joy and connectedness with our children if we are feeling overly burdened by the pressing need to log every bread stick a child consumes and a mandatory WOW moment each day? Nothing can be more WOW than the impact of a relaxed, fun, happy and healthy team of practitioners who feel they can engage in all those moments of joy with a child because they are being supported to do so.

Children's challenges and how we can keep them safe

An impactful message for parents and children. However, I would suggest that there is a leadership lesson as well. As a mentor, we hope to pass along our wisdom and thought-processes to those we lead (and teach!). Our team members are a reflection of our leadership approach. Our culture is a reflection of our efforts (and/or lack of) and how our teams work to emulate what we offer them. If the company culture is struggling, then time is needed to assess our previous approaches.

What is the most important thing a dad can do with young kids? My answer might surprise you. You may be thinking something like: Providing. Protecting. Instilling values. Teaching right vs. wrong. All of these are good & necessary. But I believe something else must come first. To me, the single most important thing you must do as a dad: Know & win the hearts of your children. To know the hearts of your kids means knowing: → Who your child is. → What makes them tick. → What they are passionate about. → What they are good at. → What is weighing on their mind. To win the hearts of your kids means: → Engaging with your child in these areas. → Slowing down enough to notice them. → Expressing unconditional love for them. → Connecting with them in simple ways. → Leaving no doubt that you see & love them. Dads, Don't move so fast that you lose the hearts of your kids. Slow down & live life at 3mph. Take notice & pay attention to your children. Know & win their hearts. Then fight every day to keep their hearts. It makes every other aspect of fatherhood better if you do. How are you winning the hearts of your kids this week? #burnuntamed
