In the face of ongoing conflict and environmental crises, Ukraine leveraged #satellitetechnology to monitor agricultural conditions. 🛰️🚜 This approach – a collab between GEOGLAM (Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring) and the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, with support from NASA Harvest, ESA WorldCereal, VISTA Remote Sensing in Geosciences GmbH and Planet – helped provide real-time data for decision-making and resource allocation. Despite speculation that the conflict would severely impede the harvest, the initiative revealed an unexpected reality: about 94 % of the winter wheat across the nation was successfully harvested, surpassing estimates. EO4MULTIHAZARDS (High-Impact Multi-Hazards Science) is a project led by GMV and launched as part of the joint ESA-European Commission Earth System Science Initiative. This project represents an effort to leverage the capabilities of satellite Earth Observation (#EO) technology to analyze multi-hazard events (e.g., droughts, floods, wildfires, landslides, etc.). The goal is to understand better the processes involved in high-impact cascading and compounding multi-hazard events, decipher their underlying drivers and dynamics, and improve our ability to assess their societal and ecological impacts. The project involves the development of four distinct science cases that target both compound and cascading events. These science cases form the basis for corresponding demonstration cases, all with the shared objective of translating scientific advancements into actionable insights.
