MIT Sustainability Summit’s Post

While biodiversity strategies are challenging by nature, effective strategies will position companies for short- and long-term success. Deloitte's recent report on the topic is a must-read for any C-suite leader, my biggest takeaways being: Adopting nature-positive frameworks isn't just good for the planet—it's a smart business strategy, and aligning with initiatives like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) positions companies at the forefront of sustainability, enhancing brand reputation and customer loyalty. Moreover, it opens up avenues for innovation and access to new markets, driven by the growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products. Embracing these frameworks mitigates risks associated with biodiversity loss, ensures all companies compete on a level playing field and uncovers new potentials for growth.

The Sustainability Leaders 2024 reveals the top 6 sustainability challenges as extremely urgent:   1- Climate change 2- Biodiversity loss 3- Deforestation 4- Water scarcity 5- Food security 6- Water pollution   Conducted by GlobeScan | ERM Sustainability Institute, the study captures the perspectives of hundreds of sustainability experts worldwide on the priorities and forces shaping the sustainable development agenda. This year’s study covers responses from approximately 500 sustainability experts from 60 countries.

Sheila Ongie, our Senior Director of Sustainability, attended GreenBiz Group's Bloom '23. She put together her top takeaways in one of our recent articles (full article linked in the comments): 1. It is critical that conservation and restoration plans center the wisdom and participation of Indigenous communities. 2. Since the economy and nature are inextricably linked, we need to consider nature in the context of every business system - not as a separate practice. 3. The top five factors driving nature loss are well-known, so let’s do something about them while we still can. 4. Last week I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ)‘s National Biodiversity Offsets Conference 3.0! Coming from a largely carbon background it was a steep learning curve, yet I was able to draw so many parallels. The knowledge shared was enriching and whilst contrasting opinions were notable, one undertone that proliferated was the need for stronger and more rigorous application of the mitigation hierarchy. ✨✨Avoid -> Mitigate -> Offset✨✨ Offsets (of any sort), whilst seemingly a necessary part of the solution, cannot allow us to become complacent. Every possible step must be taken to avoid and mitigate impacts as nature cannot simply be replaced. We must adopt a systems thinking approach and shift towards an eco-centric perspective. Importantly, this means integrating and valuing traditional knowledge far more deeply. As with all things sustainability, I would describe myself coming out of this conference as optimistic with a spidey sense of impending doom⁉️. It was so encouraging to see so many passionate, powerful and knowledgeable individuals representing a broad array of organisations come together. We can and will make a difference🐢🐛
