Amazon earlier this year laid off 27,000 staffers, or about 9% of its workforce, in its advertising, cloud computing, and human resources departments following a string of tech lay offs. But is now on a hiring spree, planning to onboard a whopping 250,000 workers for the upcoming holiday season, 67% more than the number of people it hired for the past two years, as it scrambles to expand next-day delivery for shoppers. My heart breaks as I see the extraordinarily large number of ex colleagues, direct reports, managers and trainers that are being retrenched. The rapid development of technology and the ever-increasing business demand to cut costs is leaving human beings and their families in an incredibly anxious and testing time. As you all embark on your new journeys in an effort to find employment, I would like to leave you with a couple thoughts. Don't be afraid to start from the bottom, you not going backwards, you are beginning your comeback. Do thorough research on the organization before you apply, I know this is difficult when you need to put food on the table but a career partner that values people and communities first, these organizations will always grow and succeed because success is a byproduct of motivated and happy people. Real Steel is forged in fire, find peace in the ambiguity of the unknown because nothing grows in stagnant water, and what will be, will be as long as you put one foot in front of the other. Recruiting Experiences I did consider Amazon a while back, being a Logistics Officer it made sense to me with all the transferable skills and knowledge. But I have to say, the recruiting experience was not great. Having been rejected for many roles in the past (obviously not just at Amazon!) that didn't bother me, but Amazon didn't even bother to send an email to inform me. It took me at least half an hour to put together the application, so the very least I expected was a rejection email! Sadly if that is their approach to recruiting, it led me to wonder what the company culture is like. Amazon is a fast company. They make decisions quickly and execute effectively. If Amazon can be a fast company while employing half a million people, surely all the companies smaller than it has the capacity to do the same? A key handbrake to acquiring great talent is not moving swiftly enough. Clients that don't interview quickly; within 24 to 48 hours after receiving a candidate resume are putting at risk acquiring quality people. Similarly, offers that don't go out within 24 hours of reference checks being done also put companies at risk of losing great talent. Know this and know it well. Decide and move quickly. Great talent is not going to hang around and wait for a company to make a decision. Know that there is at least one other company, (if not more then one), who is prepared to move quickly and hire that talented person. Got rejected From Amazon !😭 Yes, you heard me right. In 2022, I applied in Amazon and was rejected but you know what was the best part? I was okay because I had backup plans and also manifested “I should get only the best which I deserve.” Not saying Amazon was not the best but maybe for me at that time.
