The term “governance” is identified as far back in use by Geoffrey Chaucer (Poet and Author) in the 1300s. The first book titled “Corporate Governance” was written in 1984 by Robert Tricker who is popularly known as the modern-day “father of corporate governance”. The world’s first corporate governance code is the Cadbury Code published in 1992, led by Sir Adrian Cadbury at the helm of the Cadbury Committee. South Africa’s first corporate governance code was published in 1994, at the dawn of democracy, in an initiative led by Judge Mervyn King at the helm of the King Committtee. The world’s leading G20/OECD Corporate Governance Principles were published in September 2023, the fourth iteration of these principles since the 1999, 2004 and 2015 editions.
