This Thursday is Carers Rights Day 2023 – an initiative that aims to empower unpaid carers by providing them with the information and resources they need to fulfil their caregiving roles effectively. It also looks to highlight the valuable role that unpaid carers provide to society. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, mental health, or addiction, cannot cope without their support. It’s estimated that carers make up at least 11% of the total UK workforce. 75% of carers in employment worry about continuing to juggle work and care and each year over 2 million people give up work to care and 3 million reduce their working hours to be able to cope. The number of carers is set to grow from 6 million to 9 million in the next 30 years and the reality is that most of us will take on a caring role at some point in our lives. Today marks the start of Carers UK Week! From 10-16 June 2024, this years Carers Week focuses on 'Putting Unpaid Carers on the Map,' highlighting the challenges faced by carers and recognising their invaluable contributions across the UK. Anyone supporting a family member or friend with a mental or physical illness, disability, addiction, or age-related needs is a carer. This year's theme highlights the increasing pressures on unpaid carers and campaigns for their recognition and support. A Carers UK survey found: 💡 That 82% of carers anticipate significant challenges to their physical and mental health in the coming year, 💡 Nearly 60% believe that feeling valued as carers would improve their well-being. Employers can support carers by: ✔ Encouraging the Provision of a Carers Passport: This document helps carers and managers discuss and document needed flexibilities, reducing the need for renegotiation with each job change. ✔ Prioritising Flexible Working: Flexible arrangements are crucial for managing care responsibilities. ✔ Supporting Carers Networks: Forums for sharing knowledge and resources, raise awareness of caring issues. ✔ Reviewing and 'carer proofing' current policies and practice. ✔ Raising awareness of caring and caring issues in the workplace, through lunch and learns and e-Learning courses. As a primary carer for my mum, who was diagnosed with dementia just before the pandemic, I know the challenges involved. I don’t talk about it much; sometime people can be unempathetic, to one just wants to get on with it. Conversations with other carers really helps and does bring some comfort. Flexible working has been a lifesaver, and I strongly advocate for the Carers Passport—it truly helps! Today, I salute every carer, young and old, past and present, you are the true heroes of our communities. Give a shoutout to someone you know who is or was a carer. These individuals are #amazing. It's Carers' Week, and the theme this year is Putting Carers on the Map. To that end, I want to share a reminder of what a carer is, because I think a lot of people don't realise it applies to them. A carer is anyone who supports someone who's getting older, is disabled, or has an illness (including mental health problems and addiction). I've mentioned this before, but I didn't feel comfortable with the label at first. It felt like an institutionalised term for something you do naturally for your loved ones. But exploring it opened up some great sources of support for me. I also wanted to share something about what it's like to be a carer for someone you love, because it's complicated. It's rewarding and you want to do it, but it's incredibly tough and for most of us there's no choice, because there's no other support available. A recent study by Carers UK found that unpaid carers report negative impacts on their mental and physical health, their job and ability to work, their finances and savings, and on their relationships. And top of that, the Department for Work and Pensions is currently forcing unpaid carers into debt and prosecuting them for fraud over mistakes it made with benefits overpayments. If you're a fellow carer, I'm always here to talk. If you haven't contacted your local carer support org, I'd really recommend it. If you lead a team, now's a good time to think about the ways you support the carers working for you. Carers Rights Day is about raising awareness of carers' rights and entitlements, to help carers get the support they need. If you are an unpaid carer, you’re entitled to certain rights which may help you access services, look after your health and wellbeing or could provide vital information and support in looking after your partner, family member or friend. Carers UK campaigns for better rights for the UK’s unpaid carers, and have launched a new report, for Carers Rights Day, which looks at the impact of juggling work with care - plus the rights that carers have now, new changes to the law and what they believe would best support carers in employment in the future. Carers Week Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. The impact of caring on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work can be significant. Whilst many feel that caring is one of the most important things they do, its challenges should not be underestimated. Caring without the right information and support can be tough. It is vitally important that we recognise the contribution carers make to their families and local communities, workplaces and society, and that they get the support they need. Carers need to be recognised for the difficulties they are experiencing, respected for all they are doing, provided with information, and given the support they need to care safely.

Please read and share! ⭐ Your rights: today, tomorrow and in the future Each year Carers UK promotes Carer’s Rights Day where they are joined by hundreds of organisations and thousands of individuals raising awareness of caring, helping to identify carers and signposting them to information, advice and support. Whether someone has recently become a Carer, realised they have been caring for a while without support, or has been caring for someone for many years, it’s important they understand their rights and are able to access the support that is available to them whenever they need it. Carer’s Rights Day empowers carers with information and support. It helps them to feel confident asking for what they need and challenge things when their rights are not being met, whether that be that in the workplace or education, in accessing health or social care, when interacting with other professionals or at home. ⭐ Your rights, right now: - If you are juggling work with your caring responsibilities, you have the right to request flexible working. - If you provide unpaid care, you can ask your GP practice to identify you as a carer on your patient record and might be called forward for priority vaccines or other public health campaigns. - It’s essential to find ways to look after your health and wellbeing and one way is to exercise your right to request a free flu jab. - If you look after an older or disabled person, the law - under the Equality Act 2010 – protects you against direct discrimination or harassment because of your caring responsibilities. - Many carers find it easier to continue in their caring role if they can get some assistance. If it appears that they have needs for support, they can have a carer’s assessment. - If you are a carer and the person you care for is being discharged from the hospital, the hospital must identify and consult with you, where possible. ⭐ New rights, right around the corner: - The Carer’s Leave Act is something Carers UK has been campaigning for tirelessly for many years and we expect it will become law in 2024. - It will give employees juggling work with unpaid care a legal right to request up to five days unpaid leave every twelve months, which will help many manage some of the day-to-day challenges of being a carer – enabling them to stay in employment. - With the introduction of the new Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act anyone, including unpaid will be able to ask their employer for changes to their working hours, times of work, or place of work, from day one. - And being able to ask for a different flexible working arrangement more than once a year will be a huge help too.
