A Quantitative Human Factors Study of Neurology Examination with the Aid of AI and Digital Technology: This post addresses the challenge of monitoring patients with neuromuscular conditions, as outlined by the MGnet initiative (https://lnkd.in/gtXYF8c4). We propose a comprehensive digital solution that can automatically compute the MG-Composite score from a standard Zoom call (reference: https://lnkd.in/dqe_PZbn). However, to ensure the validity of this approach, we also need to understand the factors that can influence the reproducibility of the MG-Composite score during a standard clinical examination performed by a certified neurologist. This new manuscript (reference: https://lnkd.in/g6iDkP57) investigates why specialists may often assign different scores to the same patient based on the same telemedicine Zoom call.

Today, I am pleased to highlight a significant achievement by a wonderful member of our research group.   In 2021, Hannah Nora Wolf took her first steps into the complex world of biomedical research as part of her master's degree. Recently, she brought her findings to light, opening avenues for potentially groundbreaking developments in the future.   🔬 Research Highlights: In her master's thesis, Hannah Nora Wolf investigated the potential of human antibodies isolated from the blood of NMOSD patients to bind ex vivo to mouse retinas. These antibodies were shown to stimulate gliosis and alter cytokine patterns without affecting complement transcription. These initial results could serve as a stepping stone for innovative studies in this area.   💪 We appreciate every contribution: As we all strive for significant publications, it is critical to recognize the tremendous impact that even a first publication has, especially for young scientists. I remember my first steps in this field being a mixture of excitement and respect. It's important to give publicly funded data a platform, even if it doesn't make a perfect, well-rounded story. Sharing this data with a balance of caution and objective criticism can be productive ground for learning and growth.   🔎 Shared Excellence: This journey was fostered by the collective efforts of the entire amazing ***Experimental Ophthalmology Marburg*** team, complemented by the insights of NMOSD experts in Munich.   💼 A glimpse into the future: Get ready to see more from Hannah Nora Wolf, as her ongoing PhD work already hints at promising discoveries, with a particular focus on endothelial cells.   🎉 Celebratory Notice: Just 11 days after publication, nearly 300 people have already engaged with Hannah's findings. Such outreach would not have been possible if the research had remained in the drawer. Indeed, we think these standards will pave the way for faster adoption of high-performing blood tests that will meet the criteria. Friedreich ataxia (FA) is an inherited, multisystem neurodegenerative disease that results in profound changes to speech, swallowing, balance, walking, cardiac health and upper limb function. TRACK-FA is an imaging study focussed on building a better understanding of the impact FA has on the brain and its relationship to clinical features of the disease. The team of investigators working across 7 sites in the USA (University of Florida, University of Minnesota & Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), Brazil (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), Australia (Monash University), Germany (RWTH Aachen University) and Canada (McGill University) scan patients every 12 months over 3 years using sophisticated brain imaging techniques. Patients are also completing a comprehensive battery of clinical assessments to establish the relationship between the brain and behaviour. Redenlab are supporting the study through the inclusion of a digital speech protocol. Data will inform future protocol design in ataxia and strengthen links between meaningful clinical outcomes and underlying neuropathology.
