Great news for the Malaysian automotive sector with further manufacturing commitments announced in a JV with China's BAIC Motor Corp. EP Manufacturing Bhd (EPMB) said it has teamed up with China-based BAIC Motor Corporation Limited( 北京汽车股份有限公司) Ltd to assemble and manufacture BAIC's authorized model vehicles in Malaysia. https://lnkd.in/guxXdAzE The auto parts maker said its wholly-owned unit PEPS-JV(M) Sdn. Bhd (Melaka) (PJVM) had a week ago signed an agreement with BAIC, which is part of Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd., a Fortune Global 500 company and one of China’s largest carmakers. Under the 10-year agreement, PJVM's responsibilities include assembling and manufacturing the vehicles in Malaysia, ensuring that the assembly plant has a capacity of at least 5,000 vehicles per year by Sept 1, and at least 10,000 vehicles per year by March 1 next year, said EPMB in a bourse filing on Monday.

In light of the disruptions caused by COVID and increasing politically driven trade restrictions, businesses are being forced to reconsider their reliance on traditional Just-in-Time supply chains. While JIT remains highly efficient for minimizing costs, it has also exposed companies to significant vulnerabilities during crises. Many are now looking to balance efficiency with resilience by building strategic buffers and localizing elements of their supply chains. The key challenge is finding the right trade-off , i.e.adding resilience without unnecessarily inflating costs. For example, the mentioned automotive industry, long time leader in JIT, has begun integrating localized production and additional inventory to reduce risk. However, this shift doesn't mean abandoning JIT altogether, but rather evolving it to handle today's uncertainties. Regionalization is also emerging as a trend, with many companies shifting to intraregional supply networks rather than a complete move away from global trade (IMD).
