#AMCDiscoveries Falls among older adults are a significant health concern and the second most common cause of accidental or unintentional injurious deaths globally (Stevens et al., 2008; Ang & How, 2020). Researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School aimed to understand if poor physical strength and depression mediate the association between pain and recurrent and/or injurious falls in a community of older adults. Their findings highlighted the differences in the underlying mechanisms between pain characteristics affecting recurrent and injurious falls. These insights will be useful for identifying patients most at risk for recurrent or injurious falls, and for tailoring future community-based fall intervention programmes. 🩺 Clinical Practice Gaps: Women face ongoing gaps in risk assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for CVD, leading to subpar outcomes and care disparities. Studies reveal that even with similar calculated risk as men, women are often assigned lower risk categories. Additionally, therapies for reducing cardiovascular risk, such as lipid-lowering medications, antihypertensives, and aspirin, are prescribed less frequently to women compared to men. ➡What does this mean for Clinicians? We must prioritize improving cardiovascular disease prevention and addressing disparities in women, including providing appropriate treatment aligned with evidence-based guidelines. It’s crucial for clinicians to be aware of issues concerning women with cardiovascular disease, accurately assess CVD risk in women, and integrate knowledge of sex differences in CVD into medical practice. For far too long, women have been treated as a subset of healthcare, taking a backseat to male physiology in every aspect from medical training, clinical trials, disease research and diagnosis to pain management and therapeutic development. Yet 51% of the United States population is female! No one’s health is one-size-fits-all, especially women’s health. There are many conditions that pertain primarily to women. But even general health issues that affect both genders, like cardiovascular disease, are characterized by gender-based bias in care. This new study is yet another wakeup call to women to take control of their health, educate themselves about their body, especially how heart attack symptoms are unique to women. Emergency rooms are less likely to give female patients pain medication. A wide-reaching study reported by Science Magazine found a “sex bias against female patients across all age groups and types of pain relief medication. Among female patients, 38% received some type of pain relief medication, compared with 47% of male patients with similar symptoms”. As a woman I can relate to the feeling of having my worries dismissed when communicating to medical doctors. These biases feed #artificialintelligence systems and produce biased decisions. We have to work on #AI but also on human interactions, to produce #ethical #technology. #health

In 2022, the CDC changed the rules so that states labeled “high incidence” only required a positive test to count someone as a Lyme disease case. Yet in states considered “low incidence” — including California, one of the largest and most ecologically diverse states in the U.S. — a person needs not only a positive blood test but also detailed clinical data to be officially considered to have Lyme disease. Not only do these different reporting rules result in systemic underreporting of Lyme cases in many states, such as California, but they also leave many patients undiagnosed and without proper care, as Dorothy Leland, President of LymeDisease.org, explains in a new blog post.
