Msc in Wildlife Conservation, Former Deckhand/Tour Guide at Portland Discovery Land & Sea, keen interest in raptors, marine mammals, nature as wellness, and rewilding

It’s good that The Wildlife Trusts is being transparent and sharing this report. For years now I have observed the lack of diversity across the conservation sector in the UK, primarily in the areas of race, socio-economic background, and gender. It is concerning and very frustrating for young people trying to get a foothold in the sector. The world of conservation MUST diversify, simply put because nature itself is biodiverse. A world where only those with a certain background can afford to ‘gain experience’ to pursue this brilliant career, or only those of a certain gender or race disproportionately get hired in leadership roles, is an intrinsically unsustainable one where only certain voices shape our collective future. Without diversification conservation becomes exactly that which we are trying to overcome in our fight to save wildlife, landscapes, and ourselves: homogeneity, biological uniformity, a monoculture. It is not simply enough to say ‘we welcome people from all backgrounds’ in job applications: organisations must do the work to get these positions out to underrepresented communities, and then hire accordingly.
