I never used to take my full leave allowance. I was terrified of work piling up. I wanted to prove that I could handle it. I believed that not taking time off somehow made me more loyal. Turns out, I wasn’t alone in not taking all my leave days. 😱 Over 60% of UK workers didn’t take all of their holiday allowance in 2022 and 2023 😱 So often I hear: "I should really take some leave" Followed by something like: 👀 The work will pile up. It will be too stressful when I return. 👀 Things are just too busy right now. 👀 I took leave 4 months ago, I don’t need more. 👀 But I’m not even tired. 👀 I want that promotion, I need to be visible. And then they don’t take leave. ✨ We’re a quarter through the year already. This is your reminder to take some leave ✨ Maybe you don’t feel quite ready to take a full 2 weeks off. I get it, it can genuinely be even more stressful to take the time off. But then, maybe just start with one day. You’ve worked hard. You deserve rest. And if things are burning when you return, maybe there is an opportunity to put a system in place to allow you some time off.

HR news update: The government is considering providing more paid time off for carers who look after elderly, sick, or disabled relatives. Currently, carers are entitled to five unpaid days' leave annually, but Carers UK is advocating for this to be increased to ten days. Government officials will assess the feasibility of introducing paid carers' leave, taking into account its impact on small employers. Data from the Department for Work and Pensions reveals a surge of 700,000 individuals providing informal care in the UK post-pandemic, reaching 5.2 million in 2022/23. Carers UK's analysis highlights that over 600 people daily resign from their jobs to care for older or disabled family members.

  Is super paid on long service leave? Generally, super is paid on long service leave – but there’s a bit more to it. If you decide to take your long service leave during your employment, you'll be eligible for the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions from your employer because it counts as ordinary time earnings (OTE). But if you choose to cash out your unused long service leave as a lump sum payment when your employment ends, you won't get SG contributions paid on that amount. Advice from Chris Kowalik for FEDS If you are a federal employee, Chris offers this advice. As you near retirement, use sick leave whenever possible to preserve annual leave. Annual leave is more valuable because you are paid for it upfront when you retire. For example, If an employee retires with a final salary of $95,000, the payout would be ~$7,920 lump sum. If an employee is a regular FERS under age 62 with a high-3 salary of $93,000, the payout would be $77/year for the rest of your life. Below is the link from which this info can be found.
