I've just seen the future as to how Teams and similar virtual meetings need to be managed, and the inspiration is from junior football (or soccer to my friends across the pond). At the annual Parents/U12 match this Saturday, someone made the mistake of making me red and passing onto me the hallowed red and yellow cards. As they say, power corrupts. Dissent, tomfoolery and not following the fun rules (parents only allowed 2 touches) led to a stream of cards being issued, all in jest. However, aside from revelling in the absolute power, it occurred to me how much better Teams calls would be if there was a nominated 'referee' who could use the Yellow and Red card buttons. Talk over someone or digressing from the topic, Yellow card. Do it repeatedly and it's a Red and you are put on mute for the rest of the meeting. It's simple yet effective. I once played ping pong at a conference. No, it was not a ping pong conference. It was a work conference. The sessions were just too boring to sit through. Some of my former colleagues know about it (because they also played with me). As a presenter (on stage or on Zoom), it hurts when you see people looking at their phone screens instead of paying attention. But that's what happens at most events (in-person or webinars). The new trend is people tune in to a virtual event / webinar / meeting, and after a few minutes while it's still playing they are replying to emails and getting real work done. You can't force people to pay attention if the content is not engaging and in a consumable format that caters to people's preferences. The best way to prevent people from 'playing ping pong' is to create valuable content and share it in formats that appeal to people.

Personally I’m a huge fan as it’s saves email tennis, but I have lost a potential client as they thought it was too impersonal.
