With AbbVie acquisition of Landos Biopharma and its early-stage therapeutic development pipeline now official, I want to congratulate the remarkable teams at NImmune Biopharma, Inc, BioTherapeutics Inc., and The NIMML Institute. These teams were crucial in my founding of Landos Biopharma in 2017 and its growth into a $600 million market capitalization Nasdaq-listed biotech company outperforming XBI by 5,000 points, characterizing the role of NLRX1 in IBD and developing NX-13 for UC, and remain integral to the development of the next wave of best-in-class precision medicines for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Belharra Therapeutics, a next-generation chemoproteomics company transforming small molecule drug discovery by illuminating binding pockets on elusive, high-value drug targets across the proteome, announced a strategic collaboration with Sanofi to advance the discovery of novel small molecule therapeutics for immunological diseases. The collaboration will leverage Belharra’s proprietary non-covalent chemoproteomics platform to screen and validate hits against undisclosed Sanofi-designated immunology targets. In business news,  Oxitope Pharma and Arxx Therapeutics announced their merger to form Calluna Pharma Inc. Calluna has raised EUR 75 million in a series A financing and is backed by Oxitope and Arxx’s existing lead investors, Forbion, Sarsia, p53, and Investinor. The new company will combine expertise in the field of innate immunity, based on damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), with a pipeline of selective antibodies that target inflammatory and fibrotic indications, including several first-in-class clinical candidates. Calluna has four promising therapies in its pipeline. Its clinical stage lead program, CAL101, is a monoclonal antibody that neutralizes the bioactivity of S100A4, a DAMP protein implicated in serious and life-threatening diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic kidney disease, systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe (steroid insensitive) asthma. Sanofi has struck a deal with Belharra Therapeutics worth up to $700 million if milestones are met. The agreement aims to develop drugs active against immunology targets previously thought to be undruggable.
