Conocarpus tree, potential harmful effects! Botanists have urged the garden department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to exercise caution before planting exotic Conocarpus tree, citing potential harmful effects of its roots and pollen. The tree is popular for landscaping roads and gardens around the world due to its low maintenance cost. Native to parts of North and South America, as well as parts of Africa, it has been used by various public authorities in India as landscaping for road medians, along roads, and in public gardens. Countries in Arabian Peninsula have used the plant to block sand from desert storms and to control pollution, said amateur botanist Shrikant Ingalhalikar. The PMC has also planted Conocarpus in gardens such as Sarasbaug, and the newly-built Sadu Shinde park at Taljai foothills, according to garden department officials. But researchers, including botanists, have urged the plant should not be used in urban settings due to its potential harmful effects on water pipelines. The pollen of the plant also triggers respiratory problems, they said. “These trees should not be used for planting along medians or close together in public gardens as they need space to grow. Besides, there have been cases where people have experienced respiratory issues, possibly due to the pollen of these trees,” said Ingalhalikar. Others urged the tree authority and the garden department to set guidelines for landscaping, including ones which promote indigenous species of plants. “If Conocarpus planting is restricted to private gardens and bungalows, it’s fine. But exotic species like Conocarpus should not occupy public spaces like gardens or road medians as they eat up space where native tree species could be planted,” said Sachin Punekar, a botanist, and founder of Biospheres.

When I travel, no matter where I go, I like to visit gardens. Some are big botanical gardens, others belong to different niches: palace gardens, succulent gardens, private gardens, vertical gardens. A few of my favorites are in this AFAR article I revised recently. #botanicalgarden #gardeninglife #travelideas #gardendesign

AGAPANTHUS! Putting Chat GPT to use on basic info on Agapanthus flowers. We are growing Agapanthus now for 25 years, our Winterstorm I believe is the most adapted for mass landscape planting. We are also doing a bit more intensive research on the topic of Agapabthus in the built urban landscape but this is good initial info! Some links we did not select but I believe Winter Storm is a landscape category mass planting winner! Agapanthus flowers, also known as African Lilies, are indeed beneficial for feeding bees and bumblebees. These flowers attract bees primarily due to their vibrant colors, which include shades of blue, violet, and white—colors that are highly visible to bees. Additionally, agapanthus flowers produce a significant amount of pollen and nectar, essential food sources for bees, especially during their breeding season, which coincides with the flowering period of agapanthus [oai_citation:1,Do Bees Like Agapanthus? Yes! Which Agapanthus to buy to attract bees](https://lnkd.in/eXMB94fR) [oai_citation:2,Do Bees Like Agapanthus? (Which Varieties?) | Wildlife Welcome](https://lnkd.in/eKhFYEFy). The flowers' tubular shape makes it easy for bees to access nectar, while their aromatic fragrance also plays a role in attracting these pollinators. Agapanthus flowers provide much-needed nutrition, helping to support the growth and health of bee colonies [oai_citation:3,Flower Bulbs For Bees: To Bring Vists From Bees Through The Seasons](https://lnkd.in/eJwQNrgB) [oai_citation:4,Why Do Agapanthus Attract Bees? - Grow Veggy](https://lnkd.in/ev6HwJKU). Therefore, planting agapanthus in your garden can be a great way to support local bee populations, contributing to their survival and the overall health of your garden ecosystem. Our current 9cm Winter Storm liners are also hardy enough for planting into mass landscape schemes direct or grown on in larger pots for spring planting when each one will give 7 +- flowers per plant. #agapanthus #landscape #garden #urbangreening #beefriendy #beesustainable
