History is important.
Mother, nurse-midwife, nurse researcher, assistant nursing professor, historian, Black feminist, reproductive health justice activist, artist and a poet
Starting Black History Month with my favorite post. In 1886, Spelman College started the first nursing program for Black nurses in the United States. The program ended in 1928 graduating 117 nurses. Remember, when nursing education became institutionalized, Black women were not believed to handle the "rigor" of nursing studies. Our solution was start our own programs. We proved them wrong. #BHM2024 #blacknursinghistory

Nurse scholar, leader, researcher, editor, educator, and activist. Keynote speaker and consultant. Posts are my views alone. #DEI #DisabledNurse #HealthEquity #JEDI #Antiracist #Nurse #EmergencyNurse #Advocacy
If your DEI work and definition of underrepresented nurses doesn’t include disabled people you are not being inclusive. There is minimal research about disabled nurses and nursing students (something I am working on with colleagues) and we are not even considered for most DEI initiatives. Professional nursing organizations, how are you including disabled nurses and the disabled community in your health equity work? If you are not, how will you correct that? What are you doing to address health inequities for people with disabilities? How are you advocating for disabled students to become nurses? What steps are you taking to address ableism that disabled nurses experience? I would really like to hear from professional nursing organizations because what I see is a lot of exclusion. Our contributions to nursing are often overlooked. #DEI #Disability #DisabledNurse

Meet Josh Vriends a registered nurse, #UAlbertaNursing graduate student, and one of the April 24 City Wide Nursing Rounds presenters. Josh, why did you choose to become a nurse? I chose to become a nurse because it combined my interests in science and understanding the human experience. Building relationships with and advocating for diverse patients and integrating this with life-long evidence-based learning makes for a very rewarding career. What was/is your nursing specialty? My nursing background is in emergency room and mental health and addictions, but I will be starting my career as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in primary care this spring. Why is your research important for nurses in practice and, ultimately, for patients? My research is important for nurses and, ultimately, patients because it provides policy and practice considerations for accessible and useable telehealth for transgender and gender-diverse children and youth. Register for your rounds to hear more about Josh’s work here: https://bit.ly/3JiRkAL #Alberta_Nurses #CanadaNurses

Chief Operating Officer at Access Initiatives | Award Winning Speaker | Empowering People with Disabilities and Healthcare Inclusivity.
#Nurse educators, I urge you to refrain from isolating students who disclose their disabilities when measured against a specific set of technical benchmarks. While the transition from nursing academia to practical application is customary, it's essential to recognize the breadth of the nursing #profession. As #educators, our primary responsibility is to guide students toward successful board examinations. However, it remains the prerogative of the students to determine their trajectory within the nursing field. Moreover, it's crucial to acknowledge that individuals with #disabilities often possess valuable skills honed through their everyday experiences.

Midwives, nurses, consider yourself asked! Run for something! This campaign school has exactly what you need if you are wondering what it would take to run for elected office. Imagine a world where nurses and midwives were in every room where health policy decisions are made. I learned so much as a member of the inaugural class last May and even if you're not sure what the future holds for you, go ahead and apply today! It will be so worth it. https://lnkd.in/emY4JzF8

Kyanna Sanchez, pursuing a degree in Nursing, was inspired by her mother, who is a nurse, and wanted to follow in her footsteps. "Like her, I aspire to be the person who helps make a difference in someone’s life. The person who helps a mother return home to her children, offers a comforting hand to a young child in pain, or acts like a family member to the patient who has no one’s support," she said. Kyanna is this week's UTRGV Profiles in Excellence student. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g-e99Zhi #utrgvpie #utrgvprofilesinexcellence #utrgvnursing

As the leading contributor of the state’s bachelor-trained nurses, the California State University is integral to preparing the next generation of licensed #nurses. Joking about hurting people at school-how do we separate the bad jokes from the real thing? -Take all threats seriously. No joke is worth ignoring. Parents: As a pediatrician, I’ve talked with families whose children were sent home due to “joking”. Let’s ALL talk to our kids about WHY these jokes aren’t ok and WHY schools need to take YOUR bad joke or your classmate’s joke seriously. Take the opportunity to discuss how a young student can find a trusted adult and let them know if they hear a “joke” like this. We can all work together to- Prevent the jokes Prevent the violence.

This report is of serious concern. Florida Nurses Flunking ?! This is truly an opportunity for Nurses in Charge Inc as we seek to support this data and take action regarding the implementations of the proposed solutions. As clearly Identified by the data here are some ways in which Nurses in Charge Inc can truly align to mitigate our nursing pipeline issues here in Florida. We are available and willing to meet with Healthcare and Education Leadership to develop Mentorship programs for students. Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, MD, PhD, MSMEd, LSSBB has been leading our education committee to provide professional development training for nurses. Is it possible some of our local educators and hospitals support and implement these supplementary programs? Melissa Mills is passionately leading our efforts to create professional development and education to support and empower CNA’s LPN’s and those members of our team who will be our future nurses. Can we align with current nursing programs to have the support and attention of their students to connect them to these courses? Nyempu Karmue-Hall DNP MSN, FNP, RN, CNA, PMH-BC is dedicated to growing Mentorship for students and new nurses. Can we support the launch of scheduled virtual drop in sessions for students across the state who may need additional support and strategies? Can we have volunteer nurses donate 1 hr to support our drop in zoom breakout rooms to provide the additional help and encouragement to help our students pass NCLEX exams? I have also been working on connecting Nurse Practioners with Community Models of Care that work. Can we spread and share the models of care that have been successful for many years. I am really calling for serious collaboration from the very excellent and world renowned models of care such as Harris Rosen Rosencare as developed and led by Kenneth Aldridge, Jr., RN,BSN, MS-HSA or boosting the funds and reach of Central Florida Health Care, Inc. or replicating Dr. Traci's House developed by Traci Thompson MD, MBA whose model has garnered the interest and research from across the country. These are all Florida Based Initiatives and models of care that within their own jurisdiction are working to provide practical solutions to rural and underserved populations. As a Nurses in Charge Inc member I would be so honored to reach out and facilitate the collaboration and dissemination of these models that work to improve areas of disparity and improve outcomes for our communities.
