Diabulimia, although not officially a medically recognised term, is thought to impact up to 30% of people with Type 1 Diabetes.⁠ So, what is Diabulimia? ‘Diabulimia’ refers to a serious eating disorder whereby an individual with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) deliberately restricts insulin for the purpose of weight loss. T1D is a chronic autoimmune disease whereby your immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas. People with T1D therefore need to inject synthetic insulin in order to manage their blood glucose levels. Taking smaller-than-needed doses of insulin, or no insulin at all, can lead to severe health consequences, such as diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) and diabetes complications. Diabetes UK estimates that up to 30% of people with T1D have an eating disorder. As such, eating disorders are twice as common in people with Type 1 Diabetes than people without the condition. August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month. Gastroparesis, also called delayed gastric emptying, is a motility disorder. Gastrointestinal motility is the movement of food through the digestive system. Problems with this process are known as dysmotility. Gastroparesis occurs when the stomach slows down or stops working, causing food to remain in the stomach for longer. Symptoms of gastroparesis include: 🔵Nausea 🔵Vomiting 🔵Abdominal pain 🔵Bloating 🔵Belching 🔵Weight loss 🔵Feeling full at the beginning of a meal 🔵Feeling full long after a meal Symptoms of gastroparesis can range from mild to severe and can affect people of any body weight. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder that affects many of us! According to the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research, Canadians have a 30% lifetime risk of developing IBS ⚠️ While IBS tends to arise more frequently in women in most Western nations, it can also affect men and children of all ages. Did you know that while Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) are different, they have common symptoms that can make a true diagnosis difficult without a colonoscopy? IBS affects the functioning of the large intestine but does not change the bowel tissue. IBS symptoms can be commonly controlled through lifestyle, diet, and stress reduction and in more severe cases, medication and counseling. IBD is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that cause the chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, colon, or rectum. Common types of IBD include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The symptoms of IBD can range from mild to debilitating and even life-threatening so IBD needs to be carefully managed. With symptoms of these two conditions appearing similar, Fecal Calprotectin (FCAL) testing can provide an accurate diagnosis in many patients with chronic symptoms without the need for other diagnostic procedures.
