Since working as a Trip Leader for Moondance in the summers of '17 and '18, and then as a member of HQ up until 2020, Michael Lackey has gone on to build quite the career for himself in the experiential education space. Now working as Director of Outdoor Education and Global Studies at the Steamboat Mountain School in Colorado, Michael has found an incredible opportunity to continue to impact the lives of kids with experiential learning through outdoor adventure. Summer is just around the corner! I love the summertime. I love to go to the beach. I mostly enjoy beach time with the grandkids. I also love golf in the summer. I enjoy playing golf with friends, and my son-in-law, Derek, and my son, Lawson. They are good golfers which makes it fun! Mostly in the wintertime, we don’t get to play. If it is anything under 50 degrees or overcast, I am probably not playing. I think it is because of flexibility for me when it is too cool. In the summertime, it is usually about 90 degrees, and perfect time for a game of golf. The hotter the better for me! The hotter it is, the looser I am. I enjoy going outdoors to walk. Most days, I try to walk two to five miles. In the colder months, I jog on the treadmill. But in summertime, I prefer to do it outside. When the weather is nice, I am outside. I will do anything to get outdoors. Whether it is beach time, going to the pool, golf, or walking, I just love it. Most evenings after work, my wife, Kathalleyne, and I will take a casual walk as well. We just enjoy each other’s company! Our time off is spent visiting family and friends, or finding a new place to dig in the dirt. 😂 We’re closing up shop for the next two weeks while we gallavant around the Midwest. 💒 Jims cousin (he has a lot of them - 39 to be exact), is getting married in Minessotta, so we’re taking it as an opportunity to hit the road and see some sites along the way. Day 2: National Safe Boating Week Tip for Pleasure Craft Boaters Around Commercial Navigation As motorboat and pleasure craft season reaches its peak, mariners must stay vigilant and prepare for the unexpected. Situational awareness is crucial, as poor judgment or inattention can cause a motorboat to get too close to a tow, lose power, or face other issues, potentially leading to a dangerous situation where the boat may go under the tow of barges. Shown here is Amherst Madison's M/V CAPT. ED HARRIS, traveling upbound on the Kanawha River with six empty barges. This area, known as the Winfield Pool, passes through St. Albans, Nitro, and the Charleston City Front, which are popular spots for pleasure craft, especially on weekends during the summer. To enhance safety, the CAPT. ED HARRIS has deployed "Last Chance Lines" draped over the head of its two strings of empty barges. These lines serve as a last-resort lifeline for individuals in a pleasure craft that may go under the tow. They provide a critical opportunity for someone to grab on and avoid going under with their boat. This safety measure has proven effective in the past and is an important strategy to potentially save lives. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek #LastChanceLines
