I’ve said this before and I will unapologetically say it again, I do this job because:
🌈 I am a kidney patient.
🌈 I know what’s it’s like to receive a chronic kidney disease diagnosis.
🌈 I have lived through kidney failure and dialysis.
🌈 I am the recipient of a precious life-saving kidney transplant.
Sometimes the politics and the noise in healthcare/health policy is overwhelming. I always feel so good when I get to be around my people—people who are also fighting the good fight to get everyone the care they rightfully deserve with their whole hearts.
Here are a few snaps with some changemakers at the American Transplant Congress who just want to make transplantation accessible, affordable, and anti-discriminatory.
Also, HAPPY PRIDE!! I am an ally and proudly support the LGBTQIA+ community in their fight to receive equitable healthcare!
Passionate about encouraging others to persevere, managing editor of the Drive for Five network, advocate for earlier detection of Amyloidosis, equity in education and displaced men.

We want all mothers and infants to experience the best healthcare and health outcomes, especially those in at-risk populations. So as part of our ongoing commitment to advancing health equity across the country, Humana funded 3 Kentucky-based community organizations that are dedicated to improving outcomes for Black and African American moms and babies in Louisville, KY. They are:
• Melanated Healthcare
• Granny's Birth Initiative
• Healthy Babies Louisville
“The evidence around infant and maternal health disparities for people of color is compelling and overwhelming. That is why we are prioritizing key partnerships that help address these critical healthcare needs.”— J. Nwando Olayiwola, MD, MPH, Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President for Humana.

🌟 Join ABLE Channel in breaking barriers to kidney care worldwide! 🌍 March 14 is #WorldKidneyDay, a day dedicated to raising awareness about CKD risk factors, boosting health literacy, and supporting long-term treatment adherence. Empowering patients through advocacy and community engagement is essential for better health outcomes. Mark your calendars and let's make a difference together!
For years, the focus has been on replacement therapies, but NOW there's a game-changing shift. Recent therapeutics breakthroughs open doors to prevent #CKD and its complications, prolonging the lives of people living with #CKD! #WorldKidneyDay
Breaking down barriers to healthcare equality is crucial! New therapies hold the promise of improving lives worldwide. Yet, disparities persist due to lack of CKD awareness, limited knowledge, and high costs. Let's strive for universal access and equitable care for all! #WorldKidneyDay
To address the shortage of primary care and kidney specialists, we need better training, retention strategies, and capacity building among healthcare professionals. Education is key, as is embracing innovation and effective communication. #WorldKidneyDay

Today, we commemorate both #WorldSickleCellDay and #Juneteenth. On this day, as we celebrate the emancipation of Black individuals who were enslaved despite their legal freedom, we also raise awareness about sickle cell disease, which disproportionately affects the Black community. The voices of #SickleCell patients often go unheard, much like those of the #Juneteenth freed slaves.
As someone living with hemoglobin C disease, a milder form of hemoglobinopathy, I stand in solidarity with those battling sickle cell anemia, a more severe form of anemia. Together, let's amplify their voices and strive for better care and understanding.
📢 Here's How You Can Help Raise Awareness About Sickle Cell Anemia!
Did you know that #SickleCellAnemia disproportionately affects the Black community?
It’s a severe genetic disorder that primarily impacts those of African descent, with statistics showing that 1 in 365 Black births are affected by this condition.
What is Sickle Cell Anemia?
Sickle Cell Anemia is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin. This leads to the formation of crescent-shaped red blood cells that can block blood flow and cause severe pain, organ damage, and other complications.
Impact on the Black Community:
Prevalence: Approximately 1 in 13 babies of African descent are born with the sickle cell trait.
Health Disparities: Despite its prevalence, sickle cell patients often face significant challenges in receiving adequate medical care. Research indicates that pain in sickle cell patients is more likely to be underestimated and undertreated compared to other patient groups.
Systemic Neglect: Black patients frequently report feeling dismissed or ignored by medical professionals, leading to delays in receiving timely and appropriate care.
How Can Sickle Cell Allies Help? 🤝
Educate: Increase awareness about sickle cell anemia within your community. Share accurate information about the disease and its impact.
Advocate: Support policies and initiatives aimed at improving healthcare access and quality for those with sickle cell anemia. Advocate for funding and research into better treatments and potential cures.
Support: Offer emotional and practical support to individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease. Simple acts of kindness and understanding can make a significant difference.
Donate: Consider donating blood, as sickle cell patients often require blood transfusions. Also, supporting organizations dedicated to sickle cell research and patient support can have a tremendous impact.
Let’s work together to bring visibility to #SickleCellAnemia and other #hemoglobin diseases to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, receives the care and attention they deserve. 💪🏾❤️

On June 19th 2024, the global community celebrates World Sickle Cell Day under the theme #STRONGERTOGETHER. 🌍❤️ Over the years, our community has expanded significantly, and we are grateful for every one of you helping us advocate and grow together.
Since the release of the 'No One's Listening' report in 2021, we have witnessed numerous advancements in the treatment for sickle cell. Exciting progress includes the introduction of new therapies like Voxelotor, the establishment of hyper-acute units nationwide, and the expansion of our Peer to Peer mentoring program throughout London.
While we appreciate all the progress made, we acknowledge that there is still a long journey ahead. Our CEO John James and the entire team at the Sickle Cell Society are dedicated to tirelessly advocating for ongoing change. We are committed to making a positive impact for all individuals affected by Sickle Cell . 🌟
As a united community, you all strengthen us, and we are truly grateful for your support.

We believe all birthing people deserve safety, dignity, and respect throughout the prenatal to postpartum journey. The Century Foundation (TCF) and Ancient Song are working to make community-based doula services more accessible by championing equitable health policies.
The maternal mortality crisis in the U.S. demonstrates how critical it is to expand doula programs to increase quality care and improve childbirth outcomes for marginalized and underserved populations. These programs are based in the communities they serve and provide unique and culturally responsive patient services cultivated by deep connections and trust. They also help enhance the care individuals receive by providing referrals for those who need more comprehensive support.
TCF is one of 11 Communities in Action for Health Equity grantees, driving solutions to advance health equity with support from Pfizer’s Multicultural Health Equity Collective and Institute of Translational Equitable Medicine.

“The health care system, in both private and public settings, that is engaged with financing, managing, and providing palliative and hospice care must directly address the issue of racism, discrimination, and disparities, particularly among marginalized underserved non-Hispanic Blacks,” authors stated in the study. “Mistrust in health care providers more than ever remains one of the most frequently mentioned barriers, and is rooted in pervasive discrimination on the part of the health care system and providers against minority populations, particularly non-Hispanic Blacks. We need innovative, multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary, theory-based, culturally sensitive, community- and faith-based participatory interventions.”

As healthcare providers and as humans we all need to do better with providing informed decision making that encompasses continuous improvement in understanding the barriers to care and impact on indigenous women, babies and children in healthcare and society. The representation in healthcare for indigenous women and children needs major improvement in order to enhance survival and therapeutic outcomes. Reading this article is a great start. Remember to work on your own bias, your own judgements and stigma so that we can all help reduce barriers to care. Please call out any barriers in your environments that you see or know of. Where is your why, where is your how and where is your impact in changing these statistics. It starts with you and grows from there.
