On the weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to compete in The Subaru Series Guelph Lakes Olympic Distance Triathlon. It consisted of a 1.5km swim, 36km bike and 10km run, a journey that pushed my limits and taught me invaluable lessons. I managed to convince one of my colleagues Xavier Ashurst to enter the race with me (Thanks Xav). As I reflect on this experience, I came away with three key lessons I learned during my triathlon that led to the successful outcome. 1. Preparation: Laying the Foundation for Success Preparation was the cornerstone of my triathlon journey. I started mapping out training schedules 6 months in advance to ensure I was ready both physically and mentally for the race distances. This consisted of training multiple times a week with a mix of swims, runs and bike rides. I also focused on nutrition and rest to help with the training and more importantly aid in the recovery of my body post training. 2. Commitment / Discipline: Staying the Course Competing in a triathlon requires unwavering commitment and discipline. It meant early mornings, late evenings, and sometimes sacrificing leisure activities and a reduction in my beer consumption! To ensure accountability I find there is strength in numbers. Throughout our training, Xavier and I would continually hold each other accountable with our training sessions. It’s very easy to convince yourself to skip a workout. Less so, when you have to tell someone else that you missed it! 3. Mentorship: Gaining Insight from Experience I am lucky enough to have a friend Jacob Rivers who has competed in 2 Ironman Triathlons and 7 Half Ironman’s who also participated in the race. Jake provided me with incredible guidance, and shared his experiences, which significantly improved my performance. For example, when he asked what I was planning on eating on race day. I answered with Protein Bars. He responded with bad idea! With his recommendation, I then switched to Gels high in carbs to re-up glycogen levels and provide quick fuel. Had I not gained his feedback I may still be lying on the side of the running course! He also helped Xav and I navigate the setup and registration process on race day which for newbies like Xav and I, was pretty overwhelming.  Thank you Jake! As I continue my journey in both sports and business, I am reminded that the principles of success are universal. Whether on the racecourse or in the boardroom, the path to victory lies in preparation, commitment, discipline, and mentorship. I am already looking to sign up for another race and will work to improve my results!

  • Before Picture! A lot of nervous excitement!
  • Getting ready for the swim. Probably one of the only ones not in a wet suit! Lesson learned for next time!
  • Gorgeous Bike Course. A few more hills than expected!
  • Smiling on the outside. Exhausted and in pain on the inside! :)
  • Success! After Picture with Xavier!
