It's easy to get lost in the science and forget why we do it in the first place – to change the lives of patients receiving the #treatments. This is a powerful interview with the first patient to receive a CRISPR-based #genetherapy for #sicklecelldisease in the exa-cel therapy #clinicaltrial. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited #blood disorder that affects #hemoglobin, causing debilitating pain and fatigue, and reducing life-expectancy. Until recently, the only cure was a #bonemarrowtransplant, but a treatment called exagamglogene autotemcel (exa-cel) gene therapy has now brought new hope to sufferers. Exa-cel is a #genetherapy that uses #crisprcas9 to disrupt the BCL11A gene responsible for repressing fetal hemoglobin production after birth, as well as activating beta hemoglobin, which is affected by the sickle-cell mutation. The Exa-cel therapy works by turning off the BCL11A gene, increasing fetal hemoglobin levels in #redbloodcells and repressing sickle hemoglobin, in a double blow to the disease. In a landmark decision, the FDA recently approved exa-cel and a second gene therapy for SCD.
