Prehospital Educators Pro-Tip: Saving Face Not all FR/EMR/Paramedic instructors have experience performing EVERY National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP) skill in the real world. You may not have … Delivered an infant. Decompressed a chest. Performed a cricothyrotomy etc. If asked by curious students “Have I ever… [insert above circumstance]…?” – and as the instructor I have NOT – the following choices exist: a) Create a false narrative by lying: “Yes, I defibrillated neonatal twins during an active shooter incident. Once in ’74 and again in 2015.” or b) State “No”. And risk the proverbial “those who can’t, teach” label. * As an educator, a) should be avoided at all costs. Your reputation is one of the most important assets you have. Protect it. But with a bit of tactical creativity b) can be refined in such a way to maintain credibility. And so I’ll answer: “I’ve never been in a situation that demanded it [the skill in question].” It implies that you are discerning with your capabilities. And more importantly, truthful. Just a thought. Cheers, ~ george *[Incidentally the quote is: “Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.” – Aristotle.] #paramedic #coaching #emt #firstresponders #firstaidtraining #adulteducation #prehospital #reputationmanagement

Did you know, 46.6% of Clinical Educators experience imposter syndrome. Even if you’re highly experienced with many years of training in a clinical role, becoming an educator requires a completely new set of skills. The change of identity stepping into an educator role can feel overwhelming, especially without the right training or support network in place. If you’re a Clinical Educator, can you relate to Julie’s story? Help us improve future support and tell us what you think: https://lnkd.in/e7sw9scc #ClinicalEducators

Competency in clinical skills (CS) is fundamental to medical practice. Amidst competing academic demands, time available for hands on practice to develop such skills is limited. In this context, the flipped classroom presents a solution. By reversing the order of teaching events, the flipped classroom ensures that valuable and limited in-class time is spent in active application of knowledge and hands-on skills training within a collaborative environment. Farah Yoosoof and I examined the published practices in the use of the flipped classroom for training in technical clinical skills and identified tips for effective application of the flipped classroom in teaching clinical skills.
