Hughes Aircraft Glory Days Part 8 of 10 A highly skilled technician would turn the X or Y handle to position the laser over the hybrid and then fire the laser with a foot pedal to trim the resistor while watching the DVM until the voltage value was within pre-burn in tolerance. He / she would then set up for the next resistor trim on the hybrid and repeat the process until all resistors had been trimmed to tolerance. While rare, it was possible during this labor-intensive manual process for the technician to over trim a resistor rendering the entire Hybrid worthless. After every resistor was trimmed on each hybrid, the hybrid would go through a pre-burn in test procedure on the Data General Test System. It became apparent to us that our department could automate the process of resistor trim, pre and post-burn in test from three procedures into one. This would automate much of the manual process, dramatically improve laser trim quality, drastically reduce trim and test times, and allow us to employ less skilled technicians to run the system. I was responsible for this project, engineered the hardware, and wrote a program that automatically aligned the hybrid within the trim station (Call 11), set the voltage, trimmed each and every resistor sequentially within tolerance (Call 12). At the end of trimming, a pre-burn in test would be performed. When the test passed, the computer would print out that the test passed with any vital data, the technician would initial the pass slip and include in the Hybrid’s lot traveler, then send to burn-in. 🛠️ Aircraft Ni-Cd Battery Repair, Test, and Overhaul Scope 🛠️ Hello fellow aviation professionals! Today, I would like to discuss the importance of aircraft Ni-Cd battery repair, testing, and overhaul. Ni-Cd (Nickel-Cadmium) batteries are widely used in the aviation industry due to their reliability, long cycle life, and ability to deliver high current loads. However, like any other component, Ni-Cd batteries require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and safety. Let's delve into the scope of repair, testing, and overhaul for these essential aircraft batteries. 1️⃣ Battery Inspection: The first step in the process is a thorough visual inspection. This involves checking for any physical damage, insulation check, leaks, corrosion, or loose connections. Any issues found during the inspection should be addressed promptly. 2️⃣ Discharge and Capacity Testing: Ni-Cd batteries need to be periodically discharged and tested to measure their capacity. This is done using specialized equipment to verify that the battery can deliver the required power output. Capacity testing helps identify batteries that are nearing the end of their service life and need to be replaced. 3️⃣ Cell Balancing: For Ni-Cd batteries, it is crucial to ensure that each cell is balanced. Cell balancing involves equalizing the charge across all cells to prevent overcharging or undercharging of individual cells. This process helps optimize battery performance and extends its overall life. 4️⃣ Overhaul and Reconditioning: Over time, Ni-Cd batteries may experience memory effect, which reduces their capacity and performance. During the overhaul process, the battery is subjected to a series of discharge and recharge cycles to eliminate memory effect and restore its original capacity. This process can significantly extend the battery's useful life. 5️⃣ Electrolyte level Adjustment and Electrolyte Replacement: Ni-Cd batteries use an electrolyte solution that can become depleted or contaminated over time. During the overhaul, the electrolyte is adjusted to the correct specific gravity. This ensures proper battery operation and prevents potential damage. 6️⃣ Terminal and Connector Maintenance: The battery terminals and connectors should be inspected, cleaned, and tightened during the maintenance process. Corrosion or loose connections can lead to voltage drops, poor performance, or even safety hazards. 7️⃣ Documentation and Compliance: Throughout the repair, test, and overhaul process, it is essential to maintain accurate records of all procedures performed, test results, and compliance with relevant regulations and maintenance standards. This documentation is crucial for traceability, future reference, and maintaining the airworthiness of the aircraft. If you have any further insights or experiences related to aircraft Ni-Cd battery, please in the comments below. Let's continue to foster knowledge sharing and best practices in the aviation community! Safe flying,
