At Fenix Battery Recycling, a licensed battery recycling facility based in Kilwinning, Scotland, we couldn't agree more with the points raised. As we prepare to expand our operations into Glasgow, we want to shed light on how we address these challenges head-on. A Milestone Merger: Expanding Capabilities and Capacity We are excited to announce that we are in the final stages of a merger with a larger American-owned company. This merger is anticipated to be finalised within the next week. This partnership brings significant investment into lithium-ion, primary lithium, alkaline battery recycling, and lithium-ion Blackmass refining technology. All of these advanced technologies will be housed in our new facility in Glasgow, significantly boosting the UK's battery recycling capabilities. The Need for Producer Compliance We wholeheartedly agree with the call for extended producer responsibility. Manufacturers must be held accountable for the full lifecycle of their products, from design to disposal. This will incentivise better product design and ease the recycling process, making it more efficient and cost-effective. Support for AATFs: A Critical Component The role of Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities (AATFs) in treating waste electrical equipment is pivotal. We also see that more support is needed for AATFs, especially concerning the costs of recycling batteries derived from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). It's worth noting that the landscape has changed significantly since the WEEE and Battery regulations were written. Increasing amounts of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) devices are now being manufactured with integral batteries, leading to an increase in batteries within the WEEE stream. Financial and regulatory support for AATFs will go a long way in ensuring that the UK can handle this evolving challenge effectively. Conclusion: The Time for Action is Now The UK is at a critical juncture. As we transition to a more sustainable future, the need for robust battery recycling infrastructure is more urgent than ever. Altilium completes expansion of UK’s first CAM plant and EV battery recycling innovation centre. Altilium has completed the first phase of work on its new mini-commercial CAM plant and innovation centre (ACT 2), marking a significant step forward in its journey to delivering a sustainable and low-carbon supply of EV battery raw materials in the UK. Located in Plymouth and scaling up to 70 staff, the 18,000 square foot facility will be home to the UK’s first end-to-end facility for recycling EV batteries and production of low carbon cathode active materials (CAM), as well as cutting edge R&D covering every step of the EV battery supply chain, all under one roof. The new expanded facility will enable Altilium to scale-up the recycling of old EV batteries, producing high volumes of CAM for qualification with automotive OEMs and cell manufacturers, while improving the recycling economics and environmental footprint of its operations. Innovations developed at the ACT 2 site focussed on reducing CAPEX and OPEX of future plants and improving the rates of metal recovery, particularly for lithium, will be implemented at Altilium’s planned Teesside recycling hub (ACT 4), which will have the capacity to process battery waste from 150,000 EVs to CAM, making it one of the largest projects in the European region. Work completed so far includes a major electrical upgrade, required to power the recycling facility, start-up EV battery recycling test bed and equipment procurement. The expansion of Altilium’s facilities follows 18-months successful operation of its EV battery recycling pilot line (ACT 1) and the scale up of its EcoCathode process™, which can recover over 95% of the critical metals from EV batteries, including lithium. Recovering these critical metals for reuse in new batteries can reduce carbon by 50% and costs by 20%, compared to mined raw materials. Altilium's latest milestone underscores the commitment to innovation and fostering collaboration across the full recycling value chain, from ensuring the safe and sustainable transportation and management of end-of-life batteries to recovery of cathode metals and reengineering to CAM. This holistic approach is a unique customer offering in the UK giving OEM’s a fully circular battery solution.

As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $14 million to increase consumer battery recycling and create a more sustainable domestic battery supply chain. Supported by the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and managed by DOE’s Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains Office (MESC), the selected projects will provide over 1,000 collection points across the country for spent batteries from consumer products, allowing consumers easy and free access to turn in old batteries and battery-containing devices and reduce e-waste. President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is building domestic supply chains from research, to manufacturing, and building a domestic recycling network to provide a diverse and robust material source for batteries.

SK ecoplant strengthens cooperation with Nevada, which is rapidly becoming a center for the U.S. electric vehicle and battery industry. SK ecoplant announced that it held a business meeting with Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo at the Las Vegas plant of our recycling subsidiary TES at 14th Jan. During the meeting, SK ecoplanet CEO and Governor Lombardo had in-depth discussions on SK ecoplant's and TES's waste battery recycling technology, as well as the E-waste business and global network. They also toured the TES Las Vegas plant. The TES Las Vegas plant is a 3,700-square-meter facility dedicated to ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) services. ITAD is the process of completely destroying the information stored on IT assets, ranging from IT devices such as smartphones and PCs to data center equipment. After ITAD, IT assets are repaired, inspected, and resold as refurbished products, or disassembled and sold for parts or materials. After touring the plant, Governor Lombardo praised Tess's capabilities. In the ITAD field, where privacy and brand protection are strictly required, TES has established long-term trust with global customers by responding to various laws and regulations. The company also showed great interest in the recycling business of waste batteries for electric vehicles. SK ecoplant is also considering plans to utilize the Tes Las Vegas plant not only for ITAD but also as a recycling outpost for waste batteries in western North America. Nevada is considered a hub for logistics in the southwestern United States. It is considered to have the 3 L's (Logistics, Location, and License), which are key factors in winning the waste battery recycling market. SK ecoplant and the state of Nevada also shared a strong commitment to expanding renewable energy. As the state of Nevada is aligned with SK ecoplant's environmental and energy business, we plan to maintain strategic cooperation and continue to explore new business opportunities.

This funding opportunity includes $41 million for the second phase of $50 million in total provided by the #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw for state and local government battery recycling programming. In the first phase, DOE selected battery recycling projects for negotiation that are expected to catalyse over $14.4 million in public/private investment. This second phase will boost state and local governments’ ability to support state-wide and local battery recycling programs. DOE is seeking projects in partnership with state and local governments to create new or enhance existing battery collection, recycling, and reprocessing projects, with an additional focus on awareness, education, and community benefits. Smart Manufacturing In addition to working with state and local governments to enhance battery collection, DOE is also partnering with states to modernise the domestic manufacturing sector by enhancing access to cutting edge technologies.
