Update as promised: at 2pm EST The Office of University Residences has announced: "No returning student will be forced to change their housing arrangement." Yes, you can keep your original housing contract. You don't have to do anything, your original plan is automatically back. New incentives will be provided if you choose to take the incentive and change the plan, but that will be a choice for each student: you don't have to take it and can simply keep the original from last Nov and Dec. Purdue's Fall 2024 undergrad admissions was aiming at about 300 fewer freshman class enrollment than the typical target despite a record number of applicants, trying to avoid enrollment above capacity, and in doing so had the lowest admissions rate in school history. Last round of admissions went out in early April and the enrollment reduction was tracking well per historical yield rate, until "April 25" happened nationwide. Then suddenly in the following two weeks, about 1,600 additional, beyond all historical "yield rate" expectation, high school seniors and their families leaning toward other universities in Indiana and in other states pivoted to accept Purdue's admission instead, based on the different campus conditions they saw. Yield rates for Purdue admitted freshman throughout recent years have been steady and predictable, in the 25-27% range, and that's also what admissions was anticipating, based on all the data as of mid-April, where we would end up with this year. But this late surge pushed 2024 yield rate above 31% by June 1, when admitted students' replies were due. Next year, new dorms approved last year will complete construction. And we will significantly further reduce the admissions rate, simply because housing and city capacities don't grow as fast as demand for Purdue education. But now, in addition to the hard work by many colleagues in securing many more beds throughout town as a first-resort answer since late May, we must further refine housing solutions to all Boilermaker students this Fall: new ones as well as returning students. All units at the university are working extra hard today, to come up with a better and the best answer. More to be communicated soon. Thank you for your patience and feedback. Thanks to all the colleagues at #Purdue Grounds and Purdue Arboretum and many volunteers, 3,738 trees were planted on the beautiful West Lafayette campus over the past five years - double the number representing the founding year of the university. I was honored to help plant one: a Patriot Elm that will grow along with our university and #Boilermakers in decades to come!

The recently announced One Health initiative will accelerate, amplify and elevate life and #health #sciences at Purdue University, positioning this great university for excellence at scale in these consequential areas and supporting students and faculty across many departments in at least six colleges. One Health represents both a foundational contribution to society and a unique strength at this land-grant insitution. This also completes the quad of synergistic initiatives at #Purdue: Indianapolis campus, Daniels School of Business, Purdue Computes, and One Health.
