Regional Tech Hubs from the U.S. Department of Commerce is a crucial competition for the #tech-driven economy in our country, and a key element of the #CHIPS and #Science Act championed by Sen. Todd Young. This is a pivotal win for our state and our university. Purdue University is excited to work with the ARI (Applied Research Institute), and through Gov. Eric Holcomb’s support, to win three out of three national competitions this season: in #semiconductors from United States Department of Defense, in #hydrogen #innovation from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and now in #biotech manufacturing from the Department of Commerce. Each is a 10% success rate opportunity, and hitting all three is yet another reflection of our excellence at scale, with Purdue being the only higher ed institution in the country as a leading university in all three national hubs this year.

Shout out to Ben Linville-Engler, Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI), Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the Worcester Business Journal for highlighting Central Massachusetts as a future leader in #biomanufacturing and #bioindustrial #engineering. With proper support and investments, we believe there is immense potential for innovation and economic opportunities building off of the flourishing life sciences industry in this region. We estimate that there is potential to create thousands of new jobs and provide workforce development opportunities to students (with and without STEM degrees) at local colleges and universities, such as WPI. That’s why MassTech has been working with a consortium of partners on the ground to bring attention and funding to support the work being done in this emerging sector. Jacobs School alumni Lu Yin and Xinyu(Alan) Liu were included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the science category! They were recognized for their work to commercialize a sweat-based diagnostic platform technology developed at UC San Diego. Their startup, Persperion Diagnostics Inc., is developing a noninvasive glucose test using just the omnipresent sweat on fingertips. Users would insert the test strip inside a small handheld device, and then place their finger on the strip for tens of seconds to obtain a glucose measurement. A finger prick is needed for the first use to calibrate the system to that individual user, but no additional finger pricks are required. After 30 seconds, the device would read out the glucose measurement, and then stores the user’s historical data. Each test strip can be reused a few dozen times, until the enzyme is deactivated. Yin and Liu met as students in Professor Joe Wang's lab in the Department of NanoEngineering. They received support from the UC San Diego innovation ecosystem, including the Institute for the Global Entrepreneur UC San Diego, UC San Diego Office of Research and Innovation, UC San Diego Office of Innovation and Commercialization, and Todd Hylton. They are: 🔋 Energy Category: University of Cambridge – Professor Stuart Scott's H2Upgrade is a new technology which converts valueless industrial wastes into high-purity hydrogen, enabling the waste-producing companies to become hydrogen producers and consumers, while promoting the hydrogen economy and distributed manufacturing. 🌿 Environment category: ThioTech Ltd – The technology removes toxic metal residues from water, oil and gas using next-generation absorbents made from the abundant and low-cost industrial waste product elemental sulfur, preventing environmental release and contamination. 💊 Health category: Ignota Labs – The team have developed a novel AI platform to understand the root causes of safety problems in drug discovery by combining Deep Learning models, to predict how the drug interacts with the body, with algorithms over complex data, to understand the biological impact of those interactions and enable drug failure turnaround. 🧪 Enabling Technologies Category: Imperial College London. The U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration has designated Heartland Bioworks, a consortium of Hoosier biotechnology and advanced manufacturing stakeholders including Conexus Indiana, as a regional tech and innovation hub making it eligible for millions in funding to focus on biotechnology, medical technology, genomics and synthetic biology, including a brand new institute at the 16 Tech Innovation District that will provide training and industry work experience in the biomanufacturing sector.
