Happy First Day of School, Kern County! As students head back to the classroom, remember to follow these tips to stay safe around schools: • Slow down and follow the speed limit. • Adhere to school policies and procedures for dropping off and picking up students. • Stop for school buses. Watch for children rushing to catch the bus or exiting. • Whenever possible, avoid blocking the crosswalk while waiting to make a right-hand turn. • For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available, and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals.

Is it Monday already? I need more coffee! It seems like every day schools are seeing more and more parents entering school buses without authorization. However, most states, including Arkansas (Code 5-39-214), have laws that prohibit parents from entering a school bus. Another of the many reasons why buses should be involved in emergency planning procedures. #SchoolBusSafety #EmergencyPreparedness #SchoolSecurity #SchoolSafety #EducationalLeadership

Are we investing into pathways, sidewalks & bike lanes adequately? I say NO and am very happy we adopted Municipality of North Cowichan new the Transportation Master Plan which will address that. ⚠11% of BC Children walk/bike to school & 48% parents drive them ➡️Children are 4.5x more likely to be injured walking to school ➡️Children are 22x more likely to be injured biking to school 🏃♀️🧑🦽🚴♀️Lets make it safe and the norm to walk or bike as kids. (there are many other factors affecting how kids get to school but active transportation is in council control) https://lnkd.in/gfkxR7Dh

Recent reports on school transportation cuts in rural areas have mostly centered on truancy. I believe we should consider: 1) Gaining a deeper understanding of rural communities and their specific needs; and 2) Addressing how these cuts could limit educational opportunities For many rural students, school buses are essential for accessing education, with few alternatives available. Additionally, the short school day poses immediate logistical and financial challenges for parents and caregivers. I hope future discussions will focus more on ensuring access to education and learning. https://lnkd.in/dpYN9s3c.
