Before and after an intervention. Let me explain. At URBANDER, we have been going through the exercise of assessing our team's strengths, gaps and areas where we can upskill to help scale the business with the help of Xaulanda Simmonds, Ph.D., Chief Passion Officer of The XauSky Group, LLC, a trusted partner and friend. It's been six weeks of one epiphany after another...all good stuff. As Scott Marrero and I waited to go through an evaluation of our values, roles and expectations from his Graphic Design/Creative Director lens, we wondered how the conversation would go given that he and I have been working side by side for 15 years and feel we have figured out how to navigate doing business together as a married couple (not for the faint of heart...trust me). And midway through our eval, Dr. Xau gives us this look (photo #2). LOL. She's the QUEEN of having what she calls "itchy-scratchy" conversations that lead to better internal communication, and business decisions...yeah, even between people who love each other unconditionally. Context: So, it turns out I'm 85% Dominant per DISC Training. With the end goal of scaling URBANDER, I came away with: 1. I'm doing much better with communicating expectations, and need to step back and give space for people to "own" their roles. 2. I have to work on separating emotion from business decisions. This one is so hard and painful because love rules all the time. 3. I have to continue to invest in streamlining our processes, realizing this is a never-ending exercise, and that it's not a bad thing. While I frequently host off-sites for clients, I've never actually hosted an off-site for my own team. Until now! Last weekend all eight Late Nite Art (LNA) facilitators (hailing from Germany, UK, Massachusetts, Chicago, and San Francisco) came together for four immersive days to re-connect, learn from one another, and deepen in the LNA methodology. We embodied the techniques and philosophies that we bring to our clients: reconnecting to our creativity, allowing space for the full spectrum of emotions, creating environments for rich co-creation and collaborative learning, inducing novelty and surprise, and finally, focusing on connection before content. This offsite was more than just a gathering—it was an opportunity for us to practice what we preach.
