The Museum of Life and Science is proud to announce that we have received a $2.3 million grant from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to establish a virtual Center of Excellence to support community science observations and data collection on extreme heat, aimed at protecting historically disadvantaged communities across the country through participatory science. The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring will be one of two National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) Centers of Excellence supported by $4.55 million through the Investing in America agenda. Howl about that, we’ve got pups! We're thrilled to share big news because for the first time since 2019, the Museum welcomed a litter of Red Wolf pups. Born in Explore the Wild: Red Wolves on Sunday, April 21, all seven pups (three females, four males) are in good health and are currently with their mother, Oak (F2304), in the den in our Red Wolf habitat. Father Adeyha (M2080) is keeping close watch from the outside. This is the first ever litter for both Oak and Adeyha. The first 30 days are a particularly critical time, and we will continue regular monitoring. Pups typically begin to open their eyes 10 to 14 days after birth but won't spend much time out of the den until early June. Until then stay tuned for more photos, videos, and updates from our Animal Care Team. Eager to welcome our newest arrivals? Here are a few tips from Senior Director of Animal Care Sherry Samuels to help you, and our wolves, have the best experience possible: 🐺 Practice the skills used by wildlife biologists observing these Red Wolves in the wild! Stay calm, remain quiet, and keep a close eye out — calm and quiet observation is key when viewing our new pups. 🐺 Take your time and visit regularly. Pups will become more active as they grow over the summer. 🐺 Look for Museum staff at the Red Wolf habitat throughout the summer to answer questions and keep you updated on the latest development changes. 🐺 Stay updated on all the latest pup developments by following our blog and social media accounts.
