Aspiring farmers, listen up I just discovered and applied for a grant to learn #sustainableorganicfarming! 🌾🌱 WWOOF-USA® is providing forty financial awards for those committed to becoming farmers through their #FutureFarmerProgram. This program offers mentorship, practical farm skills, financial support, and an agroecology certification. 🌿 The award is intended to help fund a WWOOF-USA® farm visit this summer. Participants will spend one or two months at a WWOOF-USA® host farm while pursuing an online Agroecology Certification Course with their partner, Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture (MESA). 🌞 To be considered for this opportunity, participants must have a strong background in farming, be enrolled in an agricultural studies program, or have other qualifying experience that shows a #commitment to becoming an #organicfarmer. The program is only open to U.S. residents, and priority enrollment will be given to socially disadvantaged participants as defined by the USDA. 🇺🇸 Awards are for $2,000 for the one-month introductory program and $4,000 for the two-month advanced program, with half awarded upon arrival at the host farm and the remainder upon successful completion of the program. In 2021, before the war started, Ukrainian farmers sowed almost 17 million hectares of spring crops. That is more than the combined area of Austria and Czechia. However, following the start of the war, in 2022 farmers in Ukraine sowed 22% less. The area not sown – 2.8 million hectares – is almost as large as Belgium. By the end of 2023, the Ukrainian agricultural sector had sustained an estimated US$80 billion in damages and losses. Rebuilding Ukraine's agriculture is expected to cost US$56.1 billion, and demining will cost an additional US$32 billion. Analysis by NASA Harvest, NASA's Global Food Security and Agriculture Consortium, estimates that the amount of abandoned cropland in Ukraine in 2023 due to the war is equivalent to about 7.5 percent of total cropland in the country. Despite all the losses and ongoing Russia’s aggression, brave Ukrainian farmers keep on planting and seeding grain and oilseed crops to grow grain to feed the world. Some of these plants cannot fruit properly in the acidic clay-clogged hillside soil, so we use goats to keep the heat up in the ecosystem. They increase biological turnover 🚀. One question that is often asked is – is leather a by-product of meat production? The leather industry would certainly like us to think so, but the reality is very different. It contributes a large portion of revenues to livestock farmers, and in some cases outweighs the revenues generated from the meat (for example in ostrich farming, where the skin is worth four times the meat’s value). As such, the technical term for leather is a co-product, meaning that it’s a commercial product in its own right. In celebration of #PollinatorWeek, here are some easy tips to build a pollinator paradise in your own backyard, front stoop, or balcony window: 🐝 Avoid pesticides – some of them are highly toxic to bees and other pollinators. Explore alternative ways to grow healthy plants. This means choosing plants that repel pests and opting for non-toxic pest control options. 🐝 Provide a shallow source of clean water. Shallow water sources provide enough water for pollinators without creating opportunities for mosquitoes to breed. 🐝 Offer diversity in plants and staggered blooming times to keep pollinators well-fed all season. Native plants are always best – exercise due diligence before planting! 🐝 Allow for wild places as habitat – leave some ground undisturbed and maintain some brushy areas so wild bees have a place to nest.
