Humanitarian response attempts face many challenges and obstacles, but despite all these challenges, grassroots and social initiatives such as emergency rooms, hospices, and charity kitchens - with the support of philanthropists and some organizations - continue to provide food aid to many citizens exposed to hunger and diseases resulting from malnutrition. In the (A Corridor Saves a Soul) campaign, we repeat the call to donors, organizations and interested parties for more support, and to the Sudanese government to open corridors and facilitate procedures for the passage of aid, and to all parties to the conflict to facilitate passage, so that we avoid the catastrophe of famine. #A passage that saves a soul

The world faces a critical threat, soaring hunger and malnutrition, this complex issue transcends borders, with conflict acting as a significant driver, particularly in Sudan. Millions in Sudan are experiencing acute food insecurity, a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict. Nearly 18 million people, a staggering figure, struggle to access basic necessities, with malnutrition rates amongst children reaching unprecedented levels. This crisis isn't isolated; conflict disrupts food production and distribution systems, displacing families and hindering their ability to grow or purchase food. The resulting economic instability further exacerbates the situation, driving up food prices and placing essential resources out of reach for many.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has found that 25.6 million people across #Sudan will likely experience high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) between June and September 2024.    We must not forget that this is also a child protection crisis. When food is scarce and families are forced to flee their homes, children, especially girls, are often at greater risk of gender-based violence and being taken out of school. To save as many lives as possible, all forms of humanitarian support must be scaled up, now. And most crucially, NGOs need unimpeded humanitarian access to all communities, across all of Sudan, so that we can reach children and their families. It has been nearly a year since the new conflict erupted in Sudan. But even as this tragedy wages on, we are hopeful. This Easter Season, we think of God’s sacrifice, and continue to follow the call to not give up — but to hold on with hope, to pray, serve, and love our neighbors in Sudan. Before this new conflict began last April, the region faced grim statistics – nearly 7 million school aged children were out of school, 3 million children under age 5 suffered from malnutrition, and more than 3 million women and girls faced the imminent threat of gender-based violence. In an already precarious situation, violence has devastated the region further. Today, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has found children in Gaza are facing imminent famine and will die as an outright result of starvation. Our experience as humanitarians in Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and elsewhere, tells us that when people - especially children – fall into such extreme levels of acute malnutrition, they require an immediate supervised medical and nutritional intervention rather than a one-off food assistance. It was supposed to be a time for family visits, sharing of food and messages of peace and blessings, but instead this year in Gaza, both Easter and Ramadan has been a time of sadness, loneliness and lack. Abu Yusuf says his family and many others he knows have resorted to cooking the weeds that grow during the winter when the rains fall. They are all down to one meal a day, and often when there is nothing to make bread with, they will grind rabbit feed and use that as a flour. While aid trucks have been entering Gaza, not nearly the same amount of aid has been allowed in since the war started. Roughly about 500 aid trucks are needed daily to cover the basic needs of the people in Gaza, but since the war started the number of trucks topped 300 a day - the last time being during the week-long cease-fire. Some days as little as 10 trucks have made it in. Our partners in the region, Shepherd Society, are reaching out to those in their immediate communities with food packs containing essential items. Currently these temporary measures are all that they can do, and as long as the crisis continues this type of support is a lifeline of hope.
