I call it the three C’s that hurt profitability in the in-person gym space. COVID, Costs, and Competition. Boutique was overheating at the same time COVID hit, which changed some people’s habits and caused them to find new ones, some of which are changed for good. This time period likely benefited big box gyms some because it gave them additional time to outfit their cheaper offerings while integrating group fitness with a newer approach. Meanwhile XPO was quickly scaling their boutique aggregator approach which makes sense to go public, however for zees it creates massive internal competition for the same consumer. F45 got way over its skis and is now not doing well. The newest and smallest entries in the space will likely wash out in the next 5 years. Meanwhile Orangetheory, being one of the innovators in the space, is still clicking along, improving and creating new programming, creating the best tech enabled in-person group fitness experience. And still gets the fastest and healthiest results. Not that I’m biased. (;
Another year and we are still talking about the same things regarding the fitness industry, and more specifically- "Are gyms in trouble?" or "Will gyms recover from the pandemic?" Let's be real. Gyms are going no where. Gyms are better and busier than ever. Xponential Fitness and their brands have been demonstrating MOM upward customer growth. Personally, my gym (EOS Fitness) is packed morning to night. The parking lot is filled at all times..... and I love it. When more people are seeking community or performing strength workouts- the gym is the perfect place. The only thing gyms may be sweating is trying to maintain all the equipment. As I write this, my gym's sauna is broken, and I am bummed about that. What are your thoughts? Are gyms in trouble? Do they need to pivot their business models or customer acquisition strategies? The social media world has changed a lot how fitness, exercise and well-being is viewed, accessed and learnt about in todays world. I first qualified in 1998, I was still recording match of the day on a VHS, I couldn’t even imagine a concept called zoom or teams. They’re so many positives to todays tech and social media, but one area really frustrates me. They’re too many professionals who believe a one size fits all approach works. Not everyone want to run Not everyone wants abs Not everyone has the confidence to go to a gym Not everyone wants to bulk with muscle Not everyone wants to give up meat Not everyone wants to count every calorie I love circuits and weights, if you see me running their is probably someone chasing me with a knife. But some of my clients love running. Everybody is so unique and different. We have to find what works for us, makes us happy and allows us to focus on our health and well-being. We need to promote and educate health, balance and well-being for the body and mind.
