I believe diversity is about character, merit, and competency, which can be developed regardless of physical or psychological traits. This approach ensures everyone has the opportunity to pursue their interests. For inclusive, high-performing workplaces, a shift towards meritocracy and competency is essential. This creates environments where success is based on abilities and contributions. I attended the Canadian Underwriter session "Intent to Impact: How Canada's Brokerages Can Successfully Implement DEI Strategies." Despite the contentious nature of DEI programs, I was curious about the discussion. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The panel claimed DEI programs are effective but cited no studies. They asserted unconscious bias, micro-aggressions, privilege, and colonialism as facts. They concluded groups are not equally represented although they only spoke to leadership roles. This is shallow thinking at best. DEI initiatives, though well-intended, often rely on flawed definitions of diversity, focusing on group identities and perceived historical events. The ultimate result creates an unnecessary divide through discrimination which is a race to the bottom. True diversity should be based on individual thought, behaviour, and actions, measured by merit and competency. Developing character with values like respect, integrity, and courage fosters genuine community, collaboration, and innovation. History shows countries like Canada, USA, and Great Britain, despite their faults, created environments where citizens could flourish. It was never guaranteed, but an opportunity seized by those willing to succeed.
