Special Olympics is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) - but what is ID? Intellectual disability is the most common developmental disability. Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have an intellectual disability. Approximately 1-3 percent of the global population has an intellectual disability—as many as 200 million people. Intellectual disability (or ID) is a term used when a person has certain limitations in cognitive functioning and skills, including conceptual, social and practical skills, such as language, social and self-care skills. These limitations can cause a person to develop and learn more slowly or differently than a typically developing person. Intellectual disability can happen any time before a person turns 22 years old, even before birth. Yesterday was International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I'm reminded of the crucial role the Paralympics play in increasing visibility for those living with disabilities. It's a day to acknowledge the strides we've made and the work still ahead. With over 4 million Australians living with a disability, it's clear that inclusivity in our workplaces and communities is paramount. The Paralympics provide a platform, but true change happens when we act. As professionals, let's start by embracing diversity in our hiring practices. Have you thought about the benefits of employing someone with a disability? I encourage you to consult with Disability Employment Services Providers like Sureway Employment and Training in your local area. Actions taken today can lead to a more inclusive tomorrow. Is your club or community organisation welcoming and inclusive? Modern facilities are adapting to be more inclusive, recognising the diverse needs of all participants. According to Paralympics Australia, almost 20% of people in Australia live with a disability, yet only one in four of these people participate in sport. 75% of Australians with disabilities want to engage in sport but feel limited by the opportunities available. Furthermore, while 65-70% of the general population participate in sport at least once a year, only 12.5% of those with severe or profound impairments do so. These statistics highlight the need for inclusive facilities and the significant opportunities to increase participation among people with disabilities. When we are advocating for disabled children, ‘good’ is not good enough.  When we book a swimming lesson, there is a definite satisfaction in having done something. But we continually remind ourselves that - especially when working for the well-being of others - we should strive for excellence rather than settling for any type of progress. Many times I’ve heard myself saying "I'd rather she has a bad swimming lesson than no swimming lesson." This reflects a common pitfall where we are satisfied with doing something rather than doing the right thing. Of course we celebrate progress, but must not lose sight of the goal.  We are called to move beyond that comfort of progress and embrace the responsibility to recognise that this progress often only helps a small proportion of those we seek to support. ‘Good is not good enough’ is our rallying cry to raise our standards, and the standards of those around us.  It challenges the status quo and urges us to set our sights on building something that’s great, equal, and fair. It compels us to question existing norms and to envision a future where every child has access to not just good, but fabulous opportunities. To not merely build something, but to build the right thing, at scale.  To champion our cause with a commitment to excellence, equality, and the unwavering belief that every child deserves not just the chance to participate, but the chance to flourish. #advocacy #disabilityrights #inclusion #equality
