Let's talk about a crucial legal battle in LGBTQ+ rights – Doe v. Ladapo. This case challenges Florida's ban on Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care, a vital issue for the transgender community. Central to this case is the involvement of Genspect with Florida's DOH. Genspect is known for opposing gender-affirming care. This collaboration raises serious concerns about the inclusivity of health policy. Gender-affirming care is not a luxury; it's essential for many trans people's mental and physical health. Denying Medicaid coverage for this care is more than a legal issue; it's about human rights. The Florida DOH working with an anti-trans care group is disheartening. It could lead to policies that restrict access to necessary care, affecting the well-being of transgender individuals. Beyond the courtroom, this case has wider implications. It impacts how society views transgender individuals and their healthcare needs. Restrictive policies perpetuate stigma and discrimination. Remember, access to gender-affirming care is crucial for mental health. Without it, the risk of depression, anxiety, and even self-harm can increase among trans individuals. Policies like this don't just affect healthcare. They contribute to a less inclusive society, making it harder for trans people to live authentically. Inclusivity in health policy is key. As we observe Doe v. Ladapo, let's amplify our advocacy for inclusive health policies. Educating about the importance of gender-affirming care is crucial. Everyone deserves to live authentically. This case is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. Let's stand together for policies that support and uplift, not restrict. Our voices can make a difference.

ICYMI: German Medical Assembly calls for restricting trans surgeries, puberty blockers for minors: Germany's highest body of doctors has passed two resolutions related to gender dysphoria, one of which warns about the potentially life-long consequences of allowing youth to transition, as current guidelines being prepared by the government recommend an affirmative approach. #transgender #genderaffirmingcare #pubertyblockers #Germany #transsurgeries

This is devistating. By not treating BEFORE puberty changes happen you're condeming that person to undergo physical changes that are not congruent with their identity. Which then take surgery to reverse, leaving scars, and many changes are irreversable. Blockers ARE the answer!!! https://lnkd.in/e_XhEStq #transgender #hormoneblockers #lgbtq #littlefrogs #wearegoingbackwards

9 years ago this month this piece ran in Chicago magazine on the creation of our gender development program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. Life seemed simpler then. Healthcare was healthcare. The following is a nicely worded letter to the editor in yesterday’s The New York Times by Benjamin Hoffman, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics in response to the recently published Cass Report. 🙏👍 “Despite how it is often characterized, the AAP gender-affirming care policy statement calls for individualized health care for each patient, in consultation with their family and health care team. Dr. Hilary Cass suggests that American doctors should do what they are trained to do. We agree. The A.A.P. recommends that pediatricians care for gender-diverse young people the same way they care for all their patients. Critics of our policy often mischaracterize gender-affirming care as aggressively pushing medications or interventions. That is wrong. There are no predetermined treatments or timelines. Gender-affirming care begins with conversation, and it often goes no further than that. For many young people, having the space and time to explore their gender identity with the support of their loved ones and health care team is critical to their well-being. This health care approach integrates medical, mental health and social services, including resources and supports for parents and families. Dr. Cass says that politics should have no role in medical decision-making. We agree. In the U.S., politicians in over 20 states have placed their judgment ahead of parents and doctors by seeking to ban this care and criminalize those who provide it. Even following the publication of Dr. Cass’s report, no European country except Russia has fully banned the provision of gender-affirming care when medically necessary. Dr. Cass casts broad-scale doubt on existing research. We disagree. The evidence supporting our recommendations is far more nuanced than is represented in the interview. An independent review that is already underway will evaluate the body of evidence so the A.A.P. can continue to provide the best guidance to pediatricians. Dr. Cass’s conclusions will be considered in this review. The AAP will continue to follow the science and put patients and families first.” …and so will we at Lurie Children’s! Thank you AAP & Dr. Hoffman!!

MEDICAL CARE SHOULD BE ROOTED IN FACTS (Just the facts, ma’am.) Gender-affirming isn’t only about Trans kids. It’s males with gynecomastia, too, and you would be amazed at how many there are. P.S. Faith doesn’t equate with fact. Using it as your only leverage for conversation with fully engaged listeners, is underestimating your audience and their intelligence and spirit plus telegraphing your weaknesses of faith and inability to hear with an open mind and heart. To keep it open is not to say to allow all negative influences to manifest, just temper them.
Despite widespread disinformation, a recent study reveals that the vast majority of children who receive gender-affirming surgery are cisgender, not transgender. This crucial finding helps to dismantle myths and fears surrounding these procedures. The research underscores that gender-affirming surgeries are safe and beneficial, providing necessary care to those who need it while having no adverse effects on cisgender children. It’s a strong reminder that the conversation around gender-affirming care should be rooted in FACTS. Part of #ActiveAllyship is correcting and dispelling disinformation like this. Read the article to learn more and commit to supporting and advocating for informed, evidence-based care for all youth exploring their gender identity. By understanding and sharing accurate information, we can provide more inclusive and supportive care for everyone. #GenderAffirmingCare #Disinformation #TransYouth #LifeSavingCare

This sounded like a questionable article to me, but it actually *is* in support of gender affirmation - just points out the hypocrisy of how easily *cis* male kids can get chest reduction surgery for gynecomastia... "Researchers found roughly 150 cases in which a minor received gender-affirming surgery in 2019. But of those cases, 146 — about 97% — were chest reduction surgeries performed on cisgender male youth, constituting gender-affirming care for conditions like gynecomastia (which can develop nearly half the time among those undergoing testosterone-dominant puberty). No trans or gender-diverse (TGD) youth under 12 years old received any gender-affirming surgeries, researchers noted, and the rare few that were performed on 13-17-year-olds were almost exclusively chest-related procedures. The numbers demonstrate that “concerns around high rates of gender-affirming surgery use [...] may be unwarranted,” researchers determined."

In a shocking revelation, it's come to light that an estimated 3.5 million women have undergone pelvic exams without their consent in 2023. This staggering figure underscores a deep-rooted issue in our medical institutions, where women's bodies are often treated as mere tools for education rather than with the respect and autonomy they deserve. Across many U.S. states, physicians aren't required to obtain explicit consent for these exams, and they are frequently performed by doctors or doctors-in-training while women are under anesthesia for other procedures. While some exams are deemed medically necessary, many are conducted solely for the educational benefit of medical trainees. At some hospitals, this is discussed with patients or included in consent forms, but at others, women are left unaware. Phoebe Friesen, a biomedical ethicist at McGill University, brought significant attention to this issue in 2018, leading to widespread stories shared under the hashtag #MeTooPelvic. Dr. Friesen encountered narratives from medical students who felt entitled to perform these exams without consent because it benefited their training. This disregard for women's autonomy isn't limited to the medical field. Recently, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker sparked controversy by telling female graduates that one of their most important roles in life would be as "homemakers." In the same speech at Benedictine College, Kansas, he criticized abortion and LGBT Pride, further pushing a regressive agenda that confines women to traditional roles and denies them the right to make decisions about their own bodies. The situation is even more dire with the rise of abortion bans. These laws are now resulting in women being forced to carry pregnancies to term, even when the fetus has no chance of survival, endangering their own lives in the process. The attacks on women's rights and autonomy are relentless. At what point do women's bodies and minds cease to be subject to men's debate, training, and permission? It's not hyperbolic to say that our society needs to start respecting women and their contributions. The constant erosion of women's rights, whether through unauthorized medical procedures, condescending speeches, or restrictive abortion laws, must end. Women deserve to live with their bodies and minds intact, free from control and fully respected for their autonomy and worth. We must advocate for explicit consent in medical procedures, challenge regressive societal norms, and fight for reproductive rights. It's time to acknowledge and respect women's autonomy and contributions to society, ensuring they are treated with the dignity and independence they inherently deserve.
