‼️Kaiser closes Geisinger acquisition, launching Risant Health ‘Risant Health has completed its acquisition of Pennsylvania-based health system Geisinger, marking the official launch of the fledgling hospital operator formed by California nonprofit giant Kaiser Permanente. Geisinger is the first health system to join Risant, but it’s far from the last. Risant expects to acquire four to five additional health systems over the next half decade, with the goal of reaching total revenue of between $30 billion and $35 billion, Kaiser officials have said. As for Kaiser, Risant represents an opportunity for the nonprofit giant to expand its reach nationwide through targeted acquisitions of nonprofit community health systems. Kaiser, which has designated up to $5 billion to support Risant, currently operates in eight states and Washington, D.C. Kaiser and Geisinger did not share financial specifics of the deal. However, it’s structured as a member substitution — similar to a stock acquisition among for-profit entities — wherein Risant becomes the sole corporate owner of Geisinger and assumes its balance sheet, according to documents filed with Pennsylvania regulators.’ https://lnkd.in/gtNd8g5c.

"The findings indicate strong acceptability of lifestyle medicine for mental illness, a preference for non-pharmacological treatment approaches, and an understanding of the challenges associated with making long-term healthy lifestyle modifications amongst people who have lived experience of mental illness." This is a very sad update to post, but I want to take a moment to pay tribute to Loughlin Hickey, a founding trustee of A Blueprint for Better Business who sadly passed away this weekend. Loughlin was incredibly generous with his time, always there to help me think through a knotty problem or to listen with an open heart as I tried to make sense of my role. He encouraged me to stay curious, to hold the discomfort of this work and to avoid simple, technocratic solutions to complex, human challenges. He encouraged me to pay attention to my intuition and to create space (like he did for me) for others to listen to their intuition, to tune into that inner knowing that isn’t limited by business or societal norms or ideas of success. We often had robust exchanges, exchanges that helped to stretch my thinking and approach…and, honestly, at times I struggled to keep up and understand him…but usually the penny would drop a week or two later. And I’m sure I’ll continue to have penny drop moments in the weeks and months to come. While our work and conversations were so often serious, there was always laughter with Loughlin, a kind of ‘lovable rogue’ quality that would usually shine thru on our calls…with such deep roots in Cork, Ireland, that is not surprising 😊 That sense of humour saw us thru many a robust conversation. As a part of an ongoing enquiry we are running, he recently shared this response to the question ‘what environments help you thrive and feel truly engaged in work?’ ‘I thrive in environments with a sense of a shared goal and ambition. Being invited to participate. Being listened to. Testing new ideas / taking risks. A sense of fun and camaraderie. Respectful but robust challenge of ideas. Begin with humility, partner with grantees, or even defer. 2. Use a DAF and remain anonymous. 3. Forget philanthropy and buy a bigger boat.

Health foundations have a significant opportunity to harness the influence and involvement of board members as great allies in advancing the mission. Too often, however, board members begin their tenure with a significant disadvantage in that their roles and responsibilities have been poorly or shallowly defined and explained. Board members generally come to nonprofit organizations with the desire to affect positive change. They wish to leverage their unique skills, insights and influence to move the mission forward. Yet, many board members will confide they were thwarted in their intentions to contribute by not having access to the information needed to be successful. Given the competitive advantage board members can bring to the organization, it is essential to start and to continue supporting a high value relationship with each board member through access to information and tools.
