Do I have to say YES? When I start with a new client, we spend some time designing how we want to interact. One of the things I always say is: “I will make requests of you. When I do, you can reply by saying ‘yes, I accept,’ or ‘no, thank you.’ Or, you can make a counteroffer.” This is often followed by silence. Sometimes puzzlement and head scratching. Sometimes, just plain wonder... Like: “Wait, I get a choice?” It’s a crazy concept in relationships! I’m going to say that again: -We all have the ability to say yes to a request, -OR we can say no. -We also have another option, to make a “counteroffer,” which might look like, “Well, I won’t do that, but here’s what I will do.” If you can’t say no, then it isn’t a request.
