In this one meeting we had 15 Oregon counties represented! Leaders, facilitators, researchers, direct service providers and all around smart and big-hearted humans from around the state gathered as part of their participation in the #UpstreamInitiative. Our design pilots and learning communities discussed what is happening in their region as they intentionally design a local Child Success Model that addresses the needs and buttress the protective factors for families in the First 1000 Days of life (pregnancy, birthing, postpartum, 0-2 years). It is clear that each community has overlapping and unique needs and strengths, highlighting why this type of place-based cross-sector collaboration is so important as we mobilize to conceptualize a Child Success Model, focused on this precious time period of the First 1000 Days, that is flexible and resourced enough to ensure every child, family and community have what they need to thrive.

I do well with keeping my composure when I hold space for individuals to share one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives. Today was difficult because to hear it firsthand how black birthing people are not being heard and falling through the cracks is heartbreaking and infuriating. To do better is an understatement. The takeaways: 1. DOULAS ARE ESSENTIAL NOT OPTIONAL 2. We need more providers not just to SEE and HEAR US but to SUPPORT US. 3. Hospital systems are too large to let someone fall through the cracks. 4. There's a lot of great work being done by really talented folks! 4) Building a solution to help monitor new mothers' health is needed. A single appointment six weeks after delivery is not enough to gauge the health of a new mom; mentally or physically. Female healthcare is lagging behind.
