Exciting times ahead! 🚀 I had the fantastic opportunity to contribute to an article detailing Sweden's new approach to a nuclear-powered future. On November 29, 2023, Sweden passed a bill to revive civil nuclear power, encompassing both large reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This pivotal move signals a resounding 'yes' 🙌 to the role of nuclear energy in Sweden's energy strategy. In line with this development, France and Sweden, as members of the European Nuclear Alliance, are committed to using nuclear energy to meet the EU's 2050 climate goals. On December 19, 2023, France and Sweden signed a declaration ✍️🤝 to deepen their cooperation in the nuclear sector. This collaboration focuses on the development of new reactors, the enhancement of existing ones, and a strong commitment to nuclear safety, effective fuel management, and cutting-edge research. My view is they are hedging. Just to let you know. Another option is fusion. Perhaps they believe it's better to be patient than to be wasteful. Fission is moving towards obsolescence at an accelerated pace, as it is "out of step, out of time, out of place," and merely a temporary industry globally. Commercial fusion electrical energy generation is a promising and innovative method of producing sustainable and clean energy. By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. Despite the title of this article published by L'Express, there is no doubt that ITER is a useful project. However we should be clear about the fact that nuclear fusion cannot contribute in the near term to tackling global warming. Solutionism lets us believe that sooner or later there will be a technological solution in the field of fusion energy—without any doubt. The Economist was right to point out in a recent article that 36 companies are now pushing the edges of fusion technology and that it would be enough that only one of these come good for the field to be transformed from chimera to reality (“Fusion power is coming back into fashion”, 2023, Mar 22). But still, technology in itself is not the end goal. If a project succeeds, we will then need to prove economic feasibility, ensure abundance of the fuel, remove public nuclear mistrust and get rid of the waste. You say fusion cannot help the climate but it has with spinoff technologies already. If you wish to compare fission with fusion, you are certainly wasting your breath as neither will be able to deal with it now. Note future plants need building by both and they would not be viable to give traction to climate saving till pass 2050. The now solution is not fission or fusion but renewable with grid-attached hydrogen generation and batteries as the mainstays. Fission wants to build three times as many plants as that are here today. No consideration of the density that will be placed on 39 countries that will try and do this, which does little for the rest of the world of 100 odd countries left. Then there is the issue of only 250 years of fuel left as identified by the UN at current use, so treble the use will do two things: 1. Use the fuel up faster and 2. Create even more radiological waste. All this is just wasting funds better put to either getting more renewable with grid-attached hydrogen generation and batteries as the mainstays. and put into a better future solution like fusion. Let's not use the nuclear term say fission or fusion think of now and the long term not the interim term. All the fission workers and the companies could easily turn their skills, knowledge resources, and investments and most certainly make more money out of fusion and for a longer period if they thought about it instead of using their old ways to not make a better world.
