Is AI Unlocking Infinite Possibilities or Taking Away Artists' Jobs? Last night, I had the awesome opportunity to attend an event hosted by my friend Matthew Carey. It showcased an incredible collaboration between 4 artists and Google Lab, using Google DeepMind's AI models (Gemini + Imagen 2). The artists first crafted their unique styles and key visual elements, then trained the AI models to generate visuals for the classic "Alice in Wonderland" book. The results? Four totally different, yet equally amazing, visual interpretations for each chapter. The crowd was a mix of tech-savvy university students, digital artists, and current graphic designers. During the panel discussion, the artists shared their thoughts on the challenges and concerns of using AI to create art. They were honest about their worries but also super curious and open to exploring the unknown, hoping to create new and exciting interpretations of their work. There were some big questions: Is the imagery really created by the artist, or is it the machine? Will companies start using AI instead of human artists, leading to job losses? These are real concerns faced by creatives, graphic artists, and designers. We are already seeing some gen AI lookalike imageries on subway ads—can the average person tell the difference or even care? Remember the famous Go game between world champion Lee Sedol and AlphaGo back in 2016? In just 8 short years, artificial intelligence has come a long way, constantly disrupting various sectors. Companies that don't adapt might find themselves in trouble. We are living in such transformative times. In 10 or 20 years, we'll look back and see these moments as game-changers. If we can't stop this momentum, I guess we can only embrace it, master it, and find ways to use it to our advantage. As Lee Sedol reflected, "I thought AlphaGo was based on probability calculation and that it was merely a machine. But when I saw this move, I changed my mind. Surely, AlphaGo is creative!" AlphaGo has forever changed the game of Go; unexpected game moves and creative styles have flourished since then. 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐞! My AI and I will be in Italy this July as a resident in BBDB's quarterly cultural exhibition, Edition 15. My previous studies use this emergent media to, in real-time, explore and visualize structural concepts inherent to my business, Sovereign Objects, as a new model of creative collaboration that architects artistic freedoms into its very nature. Themes include: the shape of (more) decentralized organization, archetypes of female leadership, new units of time, and nature's complex infrastructures as muse. It's an act of worldbuilding that requires interrogation and imagination. While the medium of AI has many, many downsides, there are, in parallel, virtues to the expediency of its capacity to quickly manifest visions — IF you have the resources to bend its depressing defaults to your will. A huge thank you to creative technologist Greg Hochmuth for his generosity in sharing that ability with me. I've also benefitted from classes through the brilliant Derrick Schultz and the team at Curious Refuge. Just a quick reminder—if you're considering a trip to Fishers, IN tomorrow, I'm excited to be participating in a panel discussion on the intersection of Art and AI. This panel brings together a diverse group of individuals with emotionally charged opinions, varied perspectives, and careers that straddle the line between art and technology. It’s a tricky topic to navigate, especially with the elephant in the room (clears throat: Generative AI models copying artists' work). But it's a conversation that’s crucial to have. I find myself in a bit of a catch-22—on one hand, I'm eager to shout from the rooftops about the incredible creative opportunities AI offers us. On the other hand, I sometimes feel like I should pull a sheet over my head and hide in a bush to avoid backlash for supporting AI-generated art. I want to be clear—I do not support the unauthorized copying of artists' work. I believe that, paradoxically, AI will elevate the value of human-created art to new heights. However, the world of graphic design, illustration, animation, photography, video, and beyond is evolving rapidly, and we need to acknowledge and address these changes. Art encompasses so much, and it’s vital to humanity. That’s why I’m stepping up to be part of this panel. Our creative process is sacred, yet deeply personal. We had our first vernissage in February with 250-300 attendees and almost half of the exhibited pieces were sold.
