We consider it crucial to the future of our industry and to our own ability to fulfill our mission, which is to expose abuses of power and produce journalism that provokes change. Without the voices and points of view of more journalists of color, there is every reason to believe that important stories are being overlooked. Barriers that keep aspiring journalists of color from entering the field include financial constraints and lack of access to mentors and training. The Emerging Reporters Program is aimed at lowering those barriers.  Who is eligible for this program? The Emerging Reporters Program is specifically designed for talented aspiring journalists who find investigative journalism inaccessible for financial reasons. All students who will be undergraduate juniors or seniors in college this academic year are eligible to apply, and students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in journalism, including people of color, are especially encouraged to do so. Participants are expected to take a full course load during the 2024-25 school year. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need. The Emerging Reporters Program is only open to students who are eligible to file U.S. taxes and are able to provide a completed W-9 form, including U.S. citizens or U.S. residents. The W-9 form requires that each participant provide a valid Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number. We will not make any exceptions to this rule.When does the program typically run? This year’s program will run from late September to June, during which time mentors and program participants will be in contact by phone and email. Building capacity in rural newsrooms is a struggle, to put it mildly. For many of the 80+ newsrooms in the Institute for Nonprofit News' Rural News Network, attracting talent is a top challenge. As a former NW Kansas bureau chief (#HaysAmerica), who signed a two-year contract before even stepping foot in the city I'd call home, I get it. Flying me out to Wichita to see the fancy #1 station in the market for a quick 24-hr trip was all by design.* That's why when I heard about an on-demand training initiative from – coincidentally – a Kansas couple, I was intrigued. Joey Young (a Kansas publisher) and his wife, Lindsey (a former high school teacher), created Earn Your Press Pass as a way to address the rural pipeline problem. The self-guided course educates those in the community, students, even staff not in the newsroom, on the basics of journalism: ethics, interviewing, writing, editing, etc. As The Daily Catch's Emily Sachar writes today in Local News Blues, "The course is a series of how-tos augmented with hundreds of tips...The tone is straightforward and self-effacing." And Sachar notes that Lindsey provides quiet plugs for small-town and rural news operations throughout. Six months ago, INN added Earn Your Press Pass to our list of member resources. Hi! Did you miss our webinar on the Future of Child Care Reporting, featuring the talented reporters Chabeli Carrazana, Jackie Mader, Mark Swartz and Leslie Gray Streeter? Here's a recap for you: You don’t have to work in journalism to know that the field is changing rapidly. Newspapers are continuing to vanish at an average rate of more than two a week. Since 2005, the country has lost almost 2,900 newspapers, including more than 130 confirmed closings or mergers over the past year. According to data from the State of Local News Report from Northwestern University, if we continue on this current trajectory, by the end of next year, the country will have lost a third of the newspapers it had in 2005. Unfortunately, the growth in alternative news sources—digital and ethnic news outlets, as well as public broadcasting—has not kept pace with what’s being lost. There’s a lot we stand to lose with less local journalism: fewer local journalists, fewer watch dogs, fewer hard-hitting stories to hold governments, businesses and people accountable for their actions. Also, fewer beat reporters. This is why I was joined by four other journalists who cover child care as part of their work for a webinar, entitled: The Changing Nature of the Child Care Beat, from Leading Independent Journalists Who Cover It, which was co-hosted by the Better Life Lab at New America and Early Learning Nation. As the country eagerly anticipates the parliamentary election results, there is a unique buzz at the Mathrubhumi Media School. This institution, known for its hands-on approach to journalism education, is gearing up for a major event: live election results coverage. A Real-World Learning Experience. The ethos of Mathrubhumi Media School is encapsulated in its commitment to "learning by doing." This philosophy isn't just a catchy slogan but a guiding principle that shapes the curriculum and student activities. Throughout the election season, students have been actively involved in covering the electoral process, participating in debates, and reporting on key developments. These activities provided students with invaluable practical experience, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. Engaging in debates helped students hone their critical thinking and public speaking skills while reporting on elections offered a deep dive into the intricacies of political journalism. On June 4th, the efforts and dedication of the students will culminate in a special live event: the coverage of the parliamentary election results. This broadcast is not just another assignment; it is a major event that will showcase the talents and hard work of budding journalists. The live coverage will be a comprehensive program featuring breaking news, in-depth analysis, and interviews. 🚨Interesting study alert!🚨 Newsroom success is often measured using internal metrics like traffic, revenue growth, donor/subscriber retention, etc. But often, these KPIs only account for people who are already within the newsrooms' orbit. What about the broader impact of these independent journalism outlets on the communities they cover? My team at the Lenfest Institute for Journalism (Diana L. and Allie Vanyur with National Programs, Joseph Lichterman and Hayley Slusser on comms, and my predecessor Amy L. Kovac-Ashley) collaborated with Danny Hayes, a professor in the George Washington University Department of Political Science, to survey residents in states served by three newsrooms—The Center For Michigan | Bridge Michigan | BridgeDetroit, Montana Free Press, and New Hampshire Public Radio. We conducted surveys in each state in April, May, and June 2024, partnering with the firm Qualtrics. Respondents were adult (18+) residents of each state and were recruited from Qualtrics’ research panel. The results are enlightening and provide real insights into residents’ news habits, views on important issues, and levels of civic engagement. We also conducted a content analysis to assess the contribution each outlet makes to its state’s information environment. Read the study here:

The Data is Eye-opening Globally - Are We Paying Attention in Africa? I delved into the latest report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism titled "Journalism, Media, and Technology Trends and Predictions (2024)" and it reinforced my conviction about advocating for solutions journalism in both newsrooms and classrooms. The Reuters Institute, dedicated to exploring the future of journalism worldwide, sheds light on pivotal insights regarding the use of technology, news formats, and revenue models across media platforms globally. While the report predominantly focuses on Europe, the Americas, and Asia, Africa's representation through South Africa raises critical concerns for media owners and managers across the continent. Among the major issues highlighted in the report is the prediction of a challenging year ahead for media organizations. Factors such as the conflict in Ukraine, unrest in the Middle East, and economic downturns worldwide are cited, leading to staff retrenchments in major media organizations. One significant aspect addressed in the report is news disconnection and avoidance. With a surge in video, audio, and newsletter formats, audiences are feeling overwhelmed by the abundance of choices available. This sentiment was echoed by an interviewee who highlighted the growing fatigue among news consumers, impacting their willingness to engage with and pay for content.   Marc Isler, Chief Revenue Officer of Tamedia, aptly pointed out the rise of news avoidance, urging media managers to adopt new journalistic approaches, topics, and formats to counter this trend. The report also suggests strategies such as better explanation of complex issues, offering potential solutions alongside problems, and showcasing inspiring human stories to address news avoidance. To combat the prevalent problem-driven approach to storytelling in Africa, there's a pressing need to reform pedagogical approaches in journalism, media, and communication schools. This entails shifting away from the "man bites dog" narrative and incorporating solutions-oriented news values. The Solutions Journalism Educators Network aims to spearhead this paradigm shift by rallying lecturers, researchers, and media scholars to embrace Solutions Journalism.
