Texas’ population just crossed the 30 million mark and demographers predict it’ll grow to nearly 40 million by 2036 — the equivalent of adding a city the size of Austin every year for the next decade. That explosive growth touches every facet of life for those living, working and playing here, as well as the soon-to-arrive transplants. The impact of such growth raises serious questions about access, equity and resources.  For business journalists, there’s no better place in the nation to be stationed. Dallas-Fort Worth is home to two dozen Fortune 500 companies, nearly 80 publicly traded companies with more than $1 billion in revenue, two major airports and two of the industry’s biggest airlines, five major league sports teams and literally thousands of other firms representing every segment of the economy. We’re looking for an editor who can lead a team of skilled business reporters to connect and dissect these topics into urgent, aggressive and revelatory journalism that illuminates the challenges ahead for our region.  The successful candidate will be comfortable working with data and records, have a strong understanding of social media and digital metrics, and have a passion for growing our online audience. The ability to manage a team to produce a balance of enterprise and daily news coverage is a must-have trait. This editor will oversee one of the largest regional business news teams in the country. You will be supported by an assistant editor and manage 10 reporters covering real estate, retail, transportation, airlines, diverse communities, health and breaking/trending business news.  This editor must have impeccable news judgment, strong leadership and organizational skills and the ability to manage change. In addition, this leader should be devoted to the growth and development of all News staffers and to DEI efforts. Hi all, After a whirlwind of a year, today I sent out my last newsletter as Editor-in-Chief of The Minnesota Daily. It’s been a fantastic year, with lots of friends and moments of growth along the way. There's a lot, but let me try to recap what happened this year: Here’s what we brought back to the newsroom: The Daily’s investigative team; The senior staff reporter position for our hard news desks; and In-person editing and having an editorial, in-office culture. Here’s what’s new after this year: A Sunday sports newsletter, called The Rouser; A Wednesday A&E newsletter, called The Scene; Executed the idea of special newsletters; Created two graphics reporting positions on staff; Created a position on staff dedicated solely to Native American issues, as well as bringing on an adviser to aid our reporter with the nuances in this area; Along the same lines, start a weekly “Best of” photo series collected from our photographers each week and published as such; Started doing more interactive posts on our social media, including more reels and on-campus interviews with students; The concept of quick-turnaround stories (requiring a reporter, once a month, to publish a story 24 hours after the news event) to help train our reporters with breaking news stories; Reinvented how we can write opinion stories: including encouraging polls for readers to be part of the conversation, a columnist clash series and desk decisions (which are akin to editorial board pieces); and Laid the groundwork for a mutual, able-to-grow story-sharing agreement with three other Big Ten papers, with a mechanism for new papers to join whenever possible. And here’s what I’m most proud of, that hasn’t already been mentioned: The Daily won four individual awards in the Region 6 SPJ Mark of Excellence contest; The Daily placed third in the nation for our digital newsletter; We covered 40 breaking news stories this year, with a majority of them being true breaking news pieces;  With credentials, The Daily was in the room covering events with the First Lady of the United States, the Attorney General of the United States, the Governor of Minnesota, and other high-profile public figures; We held five separate professional trainings, bringing in 16 professionals across four different organizations in total; Everyone on staff was able to receive a raise; Editors created and shared across the newsroom sourcing and beat guides for all new reporters to have access to; and The Daily website has been revised and updated to reflect a more accurate representation of our desks and content. Frankly, there are too many people to thank for this help. Thank you to Charlie Weaver for our guidance throughout this entire year. Thank you to Brady Gervais, Erik Bohnhoff and the whole Daily board for their support and ideation through stressful moments. But most importantly, thank you to this year’s incredible staff who were able to make this year work — an editor is only as good as their newsroom.

☝ What does it take to run a metro newspaper in the digital era ? According to four top editors : San Francisco Chronicle - Dallas Morning News - Toronto Star and Houston Landing. Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, editor-in-chief of the San Francisco Chronicle, said The Chronicle has to “win all of the fundamentals of breaking news” to succeed. That means coverage that’s fast, live, scoopy, and concretely useful is essential to delivering consistent value to paying subscribers. It’s also important, though, to think carefully about what kind of outside-the-box stories are uniquely valuable to paying, local subscribers. Dallas Morning News executive editor Katrice Hardy said the Morning News team has found that food and real estate coverage are in demand. The publication now has two real estate reporters and three “extremely busy” food reporters. “Ultimately, what we found is that our goal is community, connection, and change,” Hardy said. “But utility is also a part of that.” MacIntyre from Toronto Star emphasized that she was especially proud of the newsroom for understanding “what the story was, and what it wasn’t.” She described the Star’s key innovation for that overwhelming election cycle as an example of the kinds of experimentation outlets, and readers, need. My newsroom is losing a longtime talented staff writer/reporter. That's the bad news. The good news is that I get to hire someone to join our team. Index-Journal, a family-owned daily newspaper, wants to maintain its base of talented, energetic and aggressive staff writers on its award-winning team.
