Recently, I gave a keynote speech at a panel hosted by the Inland Empire-Community Health Initiative and the San Bernardino County Medical Society, in an effort to provide an overview of where the healthcare workforce in the IE stands today. There were a couple key points I really hope hit home for those who listened: 👉👉 Population Growth – The Inland Empire will make up 50% of the entire state’s population growth by 2028, adding more than 112,000 new residents to our existing 4.6 million. While our growth may outpace any other area in the state, our access to health care lags far behind. 👉👉 Training Gaps – Within the next five years, our region will see thousands of gaps between supply and demand for trained health professionals ranging in degree requirements from from Physicians to Massage Therapists. We will see the largest gap in Community Health Workers - a job with excellent pay and no degree requirements. 👉👉 Health Job Share – Healthcare holds the second largest share of jobs in our region, employing 10.3% of all residents in Public and Private Healthcare organizations. In the next five years, demand for 16,000 more healthcare jobs is expected, exacerbating the already dire shortages in our health workforce. But it isn't all bad news! Several current programs will help fill these gaps, including the Junior Upcoming Medical Professional Program, the Health Professions Conference, middle and high school Health Pathways Program, the Public Health Leadership Consortium, and our Community Health Worker training through Reach Out's state-certified Pacific Empire College. #InlandEmpireHealth #HealthcareWorkforce #CommunityHealthInitiative

BETHESDA, MD — At a news briefing today, health center advocates described how fiscal uncertainty affects operations among the nation’s Community Health Centers, creating disruptions in hiring clinicians and planning services for the 31.5 million patients they serve. Unless Congress acts by September 30, 2023, all federal funding for health centers expires. NACHC has been leading the push among health center advocates across the country for bipartisan legislation to address the looming expiration of the Community Health Center Fund (CHCF) and critical primary care workforce programs, such as the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) and the Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program. The CHCF represents 70 percent of health center funding. #fqhc #communityhealthcenters Contact your MOC to urge them to continue funding the nations Community Health Centers or see the already fragile U.S. healthcare system become unsustainable. The irony in all of this is that their delivery model in reducing cost while providing higher quality care is irrefutable. Making Care Primary is the common sense approach to how we need to reform and re-engineer the way we deliver healthcare in America.
